VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

because they so often flag wrongly, that's the problem.
I would love a world we could get consistent perfect linos and do away with VAR obviously but they couldn't spot the hand ball or saturday or Palace being offside.
Perfection isn't needed. We can tolerate the odd bad decision in real-time because it's happening in real-time. We cannot however tolerate bad decisions via match disruptive prolonged delays.

and nearly every match day we get reminded again and again of how bad it is and how it never should have been implemented in the first place.

very much hyperbole, the vast majority of games has barely any VAR interventions and when they do the vast majority of outcomes are correct.
It feels like VAR has ruined every match because the outcry if there is one or two incidences in a whole fixture of matches.

so you would have tolerated Palaces off side goal being allowed to stand aswell as the Henderson hand ball ?

No mate, I can’t prove that something didn’t happen. That would be impossible.

What I can do is consider the likelihood that it happened.

It is an absolute fundamental FIFA instruction that there must be no outside interference in the VAR booth.

To routinely have English VARs ignoring that rule would take a conspiracy involving pretty much everybody in the upper echelons of power within the various organisations of English football. The hundreds, if not thousands of people who are aware of it going on, would be sworn to secrecy. One person breaking ranks would risk every one of their livelihoods and probably their chance of them ever working in football again.

But they’re all prepared to take that risk because they are so desperate for the VARs to hear Gary Neville’s take on an incident before they make a decision?

I’d say the chances of that are so slim, it’s as close to zero as you can get.
Hundreds if not thousands? It isn't the moon landing conspiracy mate, it's a few referees sat in a shed that nobody else has access to; and don't PGMOL insist on NDAs being signed by all of their members?

May be so. But how the fuck do they get this one so wrong ?
Clear handball, clear goal scoring opportunity.
I just don't understand how they get it wrong

Take em to court, stop f****** around and show em we’re not gonna go away and we’re not taking the corrupt officiating from PiGMOL or the top management of the FA/PL.
We’ll never get perfection but we should at least get the correct decision after they’ve had 5 minutes to look at it and there’s no bias involved.

I wish I had the answers, but they really got it wrong, if I'm guessing then it's because they bottled getting involved and felt there was a possibility that this could only be deemed a yellow in which case they can't get involved , that is the only plausible explanation, either that or pure corruption which I don't think is the case personally.

Before VAR fans could stand the odd bad decision, with VAR the average fan's patience is being stretched to the limit, with some traditional fans walking away from the game forever. There is a part of me that thinks that this is what they want as then they can sell plenty of merchandise to a stadium full of day-tripping happy-clappers in a relegation free league.

I’ve no idea if they sign NDAs. But for it to be routinely happening, every referee in England would be aware of it. Every linesman. Every VAR operator. Every AVAR. Every VAR operator. Everybody in any kind of senior position at the FA, the Premier League, the BBC, ITV, SKY Sports. TNT. Amazon. So certainty hundreds yes.

Can you be sure that if there was no var, the officials wouldn't have looked more closely at what happened and decided it came off the offside Palace player?

Go back to pre-var days and officials did use to get stuff like that right. Now they just wait to see what var says. It's a safety net that has stopped them from making correct decisions.

I disagree, the whole reason the whole world has VAR is because the constant wrong decisions from the officials, I can't blame them - how tight the margins are at times, the pace of the game, the constant cheating, the crowd biase etc, it's a very tough job.
We had a few weekends without VAR this season in the cup and the officials missed big howlers.

The idea that the three officials are locked in a box that no one else can enter seems a little bit fanciful to me at least. There will be IT guys helping these numpties, advisors, people from the TV companies who are well aware whats going on and provide the cameras. If the commentators had zero influence then why do the usual suspect's lobby for certain favourable decision's time and time again ? Why do TV companies only show replays when it suits? i want to believe everything is above board but based on the evidence i just find it hard to believe.

I've not said every decision was right, but they actually made decisions (they certainly weren't "constantly" wrong). Now they twiddle their thumbs and hope var will bail them out one way or another. It's supposed to be a backup, but they're relying on it instead.

I think go back a few years and the lineman would have looked at who the ball came off a little more carefully and flagged anyway.

Mic them up and let everybody in the stadium hear the discussion, just like rugby or cricket.
If they have nothing to hide then it won’t be a problem will it, but it won’t happen because they are corrupt as fuck, and they answer to nobody apparently.

To be honest I wouldn't trust I was hearing the correct decision.
It would be 3 random blokes chatting as the var refs chatted between themselves lol

There certainly isn’t anybody from any TV company ( officially ) in there. That would quite clearly be an ‘outside influence’

For most games there is a VAR, an AVAR and the guy who operates it.

For international tournaments and some bigger European and domestic games like Cup Finals, they have an additional support VAR.

There’s plenty of video footage available showing this. Whether they sneak a Sky TV guy in there when they know there’s no cameras on them, isn’t something that anybody can prove doesn’t happened. I’ve said how likely I think that is, so I’ll leave it there.

Do they get to choose between BBC and ITV, like the rest of us? There's no evidence that they listen to the commentary from commercial TV.
Haha they must just chose to have subscriptions for satellite games then

maybe they are getting text messages to say how its spinning? sounds far fetched but they put out a release soon after the incident on Saturday explaining why the red card wasnt given (factually incorrect but not corrected), obviously that's from someone outside the three PIGMOB officials hence the channels must be there. what we need is full transparency and to hear these clandestine conversations that the TV companies are privy to.
