VAR Discussion Thread

True, I dont know whats going on with the semi auto now. The graphics they eventually spit out arent reflective of the still frame. Its like the VAR booth are using drag and drop for the players and just putting them where they want. Theyve managed to totally fuck it up, no surprise.
I agree ..

The world cup will now be split into 4 quarters allowing the greedy tv companies and FIFA to make even more money.
I wonder how long before 'and whilst they are checking Var we'll go to a quick ad break, we'll be right back'.

And of course until the advert has finished no announcement will be made.

All I want is a ref if unsure who it come off to quickly ask var on the headset rather than blind guessing a corner or not. I have no faith they’ll get everyone completely correct and avoid delays - but I can accept the odd rare one time to time.

:) You must realise that isn't what you are going to get? That has never been what you get. There will be some clear cases which hopefully will be clarified quickly - maybe one a week.

But there will be disputed incidents, maybe two or three a game, on which the idiot TV commentators can immediately have an opinion because there are no consequences but on which the VAR will need forensic investigation to the frame and the mm which will take two or three minutes because there very well may be consequences if they get it "wrong". As with everything else, and then people still won't be satisfied, because people never are.

Is it really worth it (asking from the point of view of someone sat in the stadium, not someone sat at home so they can go make a cup of tea for a couple of minutes).

This whole nonsense is way down the priority list of things wrong with the game that need correcting. It just stinks of people who have no idea how to implement systems in the real world and who react to the latest "outrage" by introducing more stupid knee-jerk rules.

As for only checking the corner if a goal is scored from it? Surely, that can't be serious? That is their worst idea yet - just a pathetic attempt to get this nonsense into the existing idiot VAR protocol which is already unfit for purpose.

God, I hate football these days.

They have never explained how the graphics are created, because they can't in a way that won't get ripped to pieces.

Now the water breaks at which they are intended for I agree with but they are even doing this in the air conditioned stadiums! Fucking Americans pissing about with our game they can just fuck off, I hope when that orange shitgibbon turns up at the games he gets dogs abuse from the fans because they hopefully won’t be Americans in the stadium.

Ruddiger impedes Haaland and they go over in the box, ref would never have gave pen. VAR correctly informs Ref to take a look.
Penalty to Man City. Rightly so. why should City be denied a penalty - which was vital.

It was a good use of VAR there. Nice to see Erling put the Pen away as well. The trouble with Refs under VAR is they are defaulting to not making decisions, even if they see something. But regardless, they got it right in this case.

As for the incident in the 2nd minute, extremely close but I think they got it right denying him the penalty. The contact appeared to be just, and I mean just outside the box, like a hair. But I agreed with the decision of not giving a penalty there. Even though I despise VAR, I must admit, they got these decisions right.

Absolutely!

To me, it looked clear from the outset, but I understand the ref not wanting to give it and asking VAR to have a look and see if there’s anything he needs to see again.

In this instance, it worked very well.

If they’re going to have it in some matches, I think it’s fair that they have it in all. Be a bit unfair if some teams get two extra breaks and a short coaching session, while others have to play on through. Could also fuck with the final group games being played simultaneously.

Really? I get the fact that we’re all blues (apart from the hammer), but if that was given against us I’d be livid. Soft as fuck and should have stuck with the original decision. Clear and obvious error- not a chance

That happens in so many games in the premier league & wouldn’t be awarded by VAR. That’s the issue, great tool, incorrectly implemented.

Re: knee slides, atleast the groundskeepers will be happy!
I will expect the “Klinsmann” to be Resurrected, & arse sliding to circumnavigate the new rulings!
Haaland promised Shearer to his signature celebration v Sunderland if he scored, I wonder if he will do the Lineaker arse drag as well?

Regarding it being clear or obvious, I saw enough in it to agree with the penalty being given, Haaland was being held from behind and brought down. Haaland could have gotten a head to that if he wasn't brought down like that.

After that farce with Liverpool the night before it was more of a penalty than any, it’s a pity the premier league don’t do it more Haaland gets 6/7 of them a match

I think this is the problem, fans view incidents like this differently- I suspect if we’re being honest , had it been the other way around for that challenge and Madrid were awarded the penalty then there would be pages and pages saying it’s a disgrace, all corrupt , VAR has killed the game and where’s that ‘prick Bluehammer now ?’
Instead it’s all rather quiet when VAR played a big part in getting City the win.
No doubt Madrid fans on social media and their own forums will be having meltdowns today over that decision.

However, on replay that to me is a penalty, Ruddiger had no need to grapple him like that and bundle him down, the main thing is the Ref got the opportunity to see it from a different angle and deem it a penalty. That’s his sole decision whether some accept that or not. Well done by way, was a quality performance all round from City.

Its fine for the refs to default into not making a decision and waiting for VAR, ive no probs as such with that as long as VAR then get it right.
But the problem is the introduction of the ‘clear and obvious error’ situation.
It leaves the decision grey again. The decision becomes Deciding whether the ref made a clear and obvious error rather than the offence itself
