VAR (PL introduction 2019)

Wonder which games from last season would have had different results with var. Goal line technology (which everyone accepts because it's quick) gave City a goal at Burnley and saved one vs L'pool, but which other big games would have been changed?

Remember the "goal" that won the Cup Final for Arsenal when the ball had run out of play before the cross came in, vs. Cardiff a few years ago? Welsh mate of mine is still upset by that.

And the one we had ruled out in the semi against them, that would have put us into the final, where a linesman 15 yards from the deadline ruled the ball had curled out of play when it oh so obviously hadn't. Arsenal have been fucked by the referees in the league at times but Emirates definitely made sure they were looked after in the FA Cup.

Liverpool would have loads of goals ruled out last season.

I know we’re going around in circles. But how many games are labelled shambles by a clueless ref ?
Very few goals are stopped for VAR and the longer we give it time the quicker and better the system will be.

I’d be happy to just stick with the current system of a ref and a couple linos if it meant Fans, Media and Pundits give them a break and accept the ref has a impossible job with the speed of the game and 22 cheating players on the field appealing for everything.

It's not an ' impossible ' job, it's a difficult one, which they make ten times harder, by their own inconsistent interpretation of the rules.

If the same refs, gave each decision, based on the same criteria, one week to the next, then you would know where you stand with them & know that certain actions would be a pen, or red card, with a certain ref.

A couple of seasons ago, for example, Mike Dean gave a pen & yellow card against Sterling, for putting his hands on Ryan Shawcroft's chest, as Shawcroft pushed him backwards with both hands. Shawcroft himself said after the game, he had no idea why it was a pen.

You see that & you know he is never ever going to give a similar decision against anyone else & wonder why the fuck he did it.

Then the genius solution: let's give these bizarre individuals, the opportunity to do the same shit even more, by allowing them to go back in time & make even more stupid, bizarre, inconsistent decisions & generally fuck around with the game, as well as being subject to pressure from the usual suspects & the threat of corruption.

What a brilliant idea.

See the Cavani penalty VAR gave last night? Shocker. Wasn't a penalty and didn't qualify for "clear and obvious mistake". Its implementation after what i thought was a pretty good run at the world cup has been abysmal.

Night games will be a nightmare, games will last 3 hours and everyone will miss the last buses and trains to get home.
Only said in jest but these VAR decisions take way too long

It seems like VAR is bring introduced without any consistent laws. Tyler just mentioned that some of the rules the womens WC are using are not being used in the u21 Euros.

VAR will not be used to penalise keepers coming off the line in any penalty shoot outs in the Women's World Cup.

It is still to be used in normal time though.

What a farce.

I suspect we're going to have a rough couple of years before it lives up to its promise, and we'll probably need some more rule changes/clarifications to get there.

I sadly dont see anything but inconsistent usage, decisions and manipulated results because of it.

Its an absolute disaster the way its being implemented.

Apart from the time taken to reach a decision (especially for the crowd in the stadium, who don't seem to have any idea what's going on), the biggest issue I see is handball in the box. Before VAR, trifling incidents that didn't affect a goal or goal-scoring opportunity were just ignored by the ref, but now they get to see every minute touch, they're being far too literal in their interpretation. If they were being as literal with other rules, like if a player: "impedes an opponent with contact", for example, there'd be a penalty every time a defender sticks their arm out and makes contact with someone in the box.

Absolutely agree. Incidents of 'handball' where it is completely accidental and has no impact on a goalscoring opportunity. So if the law of the game is to be implemented strictly, how about this which occurs 20 times or more in every game...a ball is heading for the goal line and the ball is shielded from the attacking player by the defender. The defender places his body between the attacking player and the ball so the ball runs out for a goal kick. Under Law 12 a Direct Free Kick is awarded when a player 'impedes an opponent with contact'. Can anyone with refereeing experience throw any light on that ?

Don’t know the exact rule but you’re allowed to ‘shield’ the ball as long as it is within playing distance even if you haven’t touched it. It’s one I’ve always thought needs changing in that I don’t think you should be deemed in control of the ball until you’ve touched it.

They are really fucking it up in the women’s World Cup. Just gone to check a red card was correct. Didn’t think that was allowed. It’s essentially being used to re-referee the game.
