VAR (PL introduction 2019)

How hard is it to get the main principles for referees? Like a tight ofside DONT put your flag up! Penalties are the ones that can be gray area so they need a black and white rule its either any contact without getting the ball and the player does a dive as well its a penalty!

So last night i thought Kane was maybe a fraction offside yet we don't really get a great angle of it.

I thought there was a nailed on pen early in the second half when i think it may have been Rudiger cleaned out someone but no one made a fuss of it.

Exactly.

The Chelsea footage no more proves that Kane was offside than that the Sky footage proves that he was onside.
I actually thought the shading tech on the sky camera proved it quite well and Sarri's picture hasn't changed my mind. Onside.

Does that indicate that PiGMOL are a law unto themselves perhaps ?
Always suspected it to be fair. When Tyler quoted Oliver saying English refs are more concerned about the product than VAR pretty much confirmed it.

Also with yesterday's penalty decision why were they only looking at it through 2 cameras when all angles are covered. Funny that Sky didn't show the reverse angle at all as well

Keith Hackett claiming PiGMOL are not using VAR as per the official rules. Very interesting thread this.

So no surprises there then. Unless and until we, the fans actually at the game, can see and hear what is said between the officials, then there is always the risk (as demonstrated last night) that the decision can be "adjusted" to whatever outcome they want it to be.
When I saw it live, my first thought was offside, and I've seen nothing since to change my mind.

No bias from a spurs fan then?

:)

Of course I'm biased!

But I'm not saying that the correct call was made. I'm merely saying that Chelsea's big show of indignation is misplaced because their footage enhances the possible illusion of offside in the same way that Sky's footage enhances the illusion of onside. The controversy therefore is not whether or not Kane was onside. The controversy was whether or not this was a correct use of VAR. I don't think it was.

Then again, Oliver incorrectly penalised Lamela as he was about to score near the end. So 1-0 was was a fair result.

I’m sure even Stevie Wonder would say this is offside.
A Spud mate said ‘That’s 1 second after the ball was kicked’ I said, BULLSHIT, he’s still in contact with the ball!!!!!

I think the main issue appears to be that the 4th official Moss? Didn't look at all camera angles available. And secondly doesn't appear to know the off side rule which doesn't pertain to just a players foot?

Anyone would say offside when looking at it from this angle. But this angle is from 10-15 yards behind play. The jury has to remain out unless or until we see a camera angle that is level with Kane.

Unless you are actually inline with play, no camera trickery is going to be as accurate as a inline assistant ref.
Anybody who uses a camera knows all about angle distortion of a lens. Drawing a line across a field might be helpful in showing if the feet were offside, but of no use to show the upper body.
Both photos used by Sky and Chelsea prove the point precisely.
I feel sorry for the assistant ref. He flags as he sees Harry offside. That's his job, and he will be right more than wrong. Yet his decision will be constantly scrutinized undermining his future decision making.
The only true way to to get accurate images would be to have them "track" cameras that they use at the Olympics. It could track the most forward opposition player. It looks across the field and doesn't rely on camera tricky to guess the decision.
How it could be implemented in a football stadium with assistant refs running the line, plus the risk of collisions with players/staff is another matter.
Maybe just have a series of fixed (and aligned)cameras along the roof area. Not perfect, but better than using corrective software.

I don't think the VAR official had access to Chelsea's footage. Only Sky's. And that appeared to show Kane onside - foot and body.

Seems odd to me that VAR doesn't have every possible angle...

And if the camera angles are contradictory/deceptive, maybe do like cricket and go with linesman/refs call?

The only ones surprised by this are those who have been calling anyone with a hint of cynicism ‘the tin foil hat brigade’
However they’ll soon brush it under the carpet as being meaningless

Going well isn't it ?

Why the fuck weren't we shown the sideways angle of the offside last night ? What did it show ? Offside or same as Chelsea's camera ? If it was offside, the result should be changed to a draw.

The rags' penalty from weekend would normally be played on, as the ball had gone before contact was made, plus the 'handball' shout vs Alerweirdo last night can be given one week & not given the next, depending on which team they prefer.

Kompany can be red carded but Van Dijk can be let off for the same offence at Anfield depending on their mood. Mané could have got away with his assault on Ederson as the ref would have consulted the v.a.r. box rather than give it, & half the media said it was 'harsh' afterwards. Pen against Bravo at the swamp for his 'foul' on Rooney deffo.

Both of Ashley Young's pens last season would likely be considered not clear enough to overturn but if they felt like it, they could give both & nobody would complain.

The 'push in the back' pen Liverpool dived for the other day, could be given at any corner kick in any game at any moment, depending on their mood.

The one thing other than goal line decisions, that should be clear, is offside & they can't even fucking show us that.
