Veganism

I have done Veganism for a month, fell apart at a family party ate a ham sandwich by mistake went home and bought a steak and have never looked back since.

It opened my eyes abit, when I was weight training I was just using the same sources for protein. Once my knee is fixed I will be more balanced and use beans for some meals as apposed to loads of chicken or beef.

We can never take moral high ground over animals lives though, Vegans bang on about animals whilst having Iphones, designer clothes, cars and pretty much everything else in modern life. Starve a Vegan and put him in the wild and I bet they try to catch fish or hunt animals.

It depends on how you consume meat that is the main problem.

If your source of meat is mcdonalds or a fry up then yes it is going to be a problem. We can digest meat fine but we struggle more with refined, processed stuff like oils and the frozen crap that we often throw in on the side. Add in things containing sugar or salt and you are probably consuming things that have no nutritional value at all.

If however you eat fresh meat cooked with fresh veg etc then it is never going to be a problem. So get your steak, chicken or whatever cooked with very little oil or rubbish and lots of veg and just enjoy it because it won't do you any harm at all.

In nature you don't see lions, tigers or any other animals going vegan because they would die, perhaps we should just stick to our instincts. We have long eaten meat long before the loony vegans came along with their 'facts'.

Fully agree, however when you are whacking back like 200g of protein a day I get fed up of the same sources. Them pinto beans are nice with paprika on I won't lie!

Nothing beats well prepared red meat it really is the best food going for me. I missed it so much during that month and no Vegan meal comes close to it.

I guess veganism is one of those things that works for some and not for others.

I personally live for meat. Meat is my life. I oppose cruelty to animals and hope they don't suffer loads in abattoirs but ultimately there is a food chain and it is my job as a human to eat them. You can bet your bottom dollar that if we lived our lives surrounded by hungry gorillas or even worse, dinosaurs, they would not be thinking of the suffering or ethics.

Even if you don't care about the cruelty aspect, animal agriculture as it is at the moment, isn't sustainable long term, the way meat is produced is very resource hungry & wasteful, it is causing massive environmental problems. People cutting down on their demand for meat is one of the best things they can do to help the environment & their own health. For people who won't cut out meat altogether, it would be much better for everyone if they could cut down their overall consumption by having meatless days or meals.

There's a lot of ignorance & untrue claims on this thread. The key bit of the definition of veganism, from the vegan society is as follows:

"A philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals".

Why do people have such as issue with people wanting to exclude cruelty as far as is possible?

If we take food as one example, there is no reason that people have to eat animal based products, you can thrive on a plant based diet. Therefore is killing a sentient being that can feel pain, distress, fear & terror, the same as we can, for a reason that is unnecessary justified? We have been conditioned to eat certain animals in our society, the animal agriculture industry is massive & they paint a picture of happy cows & chickens living a great life, when the reality if very different to this is most case. Most peope in the UK would be up in arms if someone hung their dog upside down & cut it's throat, however if it is a pig that is treated this way, it's seen as OK, just because the creature is a different species. Some of the conditions are absolutely horrific in slaughter houses and factory farming, I think a lot of hardened meat eaters would disagree with the conditions if they saw inside a slaughter house or witnessed the animals journey there in the truck, struggling to breathe as they are so crammed in. Imagine what is is like for them being herded into a slaughter house hearing the screams of the other animals & seing other chopped up creatures, knowing what their fate is. Would you want to be treated this way? If not, why is it reasonable to treat them like this, when you don't need meat to live?

Even the best kept animal on the best farm in the world is still being killed, and chopped up to provide a product, when it doesn't want to be. This goes for dairy cows when they are no longer "viable". There are so many alternatives now that it is easier than ever to reduce or give up the consumption of these products. Why not try meatless Monday as a start or challenge 22, link below for anyone interested:

Should we decided what is ethically right, based on a hypothetical idea of what you think a dinosaur would do in the same situation?

I tend to live my life that way. I even suspect I would die that way if, god forbid, the next Ice Age comes or a very very big meteor.

It's a different approach, but if it works for you then go with it! I'm hoping it's not more widely adopted in society though.

Appreciate the understanding.

On a more serious note, people can eat whatever they want. Nobody is right or wrong as long as they feel happy. This statement excludes cannibalism.

Do you believe that as long as someone feels happy they can do what they want? What about how the victim feels?
