Vegetarianism

Any vegetarian who drinks milk but who opposes the eating of meat is nothing but a hypocrite. Veganism is at least consistent.

I've had the usual whining lecture about eating animals from people who have a pint in front of them entirely oblivious to the ingredients. People can do whatever they like, but be consistent and don't moralise.

Bunch of weirdo`s

All the great food and meals your missing out on

Ah well more for the normal folk then :-)

Been Vegetarian for 14 years now since the last Foot and Mouth outbreak. I was in the military at the time and involved in the pointless slaughter. Sure the outbreak was initially accidental, however I know and others who worked on it know that eventually the chance of a full year off farming with full compensation to boot meant many dishonest 'animal loving' my arse farmers took the opportunity to accidentally on purpose self infect their own precious livestock!

In short, people believe animals are dumb, but let me tell you that Ewes were in an absolute state of panic as they were getting separated from the lambs before both were slaughtered! I came back off that venture with no respect for the ever complaining Range Rover driving 'Financially Bereft' farmers and little desire to ever eat meat and finance their lives.

All my mates said I'd last about 3 weeks, however 14 years on and I'm reaping the benefits. Not only am I not eating the dreaded Cancer causing red meat, my diet is better on the whole as I have to consciously think about what I eat and I won't fall foul to instant fast food temptations.

I suppose the only downside is that if you ever do eat out the selection is less and often you wait a little longer as the fast food outlets tend not to have the Vegetarian option ready to go.

Having another pop at it, having failed numerous times (I fucking love gammon).

Any other veggies here on Bluemoon?

Also, for anyone who likes chicken, DO NOT Google 'chick maceration'..
Don't beat yourself up over it JotS.
I've been a veggie for nearly 30 yrs but it was hard at first.
Its healthier, cheaper and morally superior ;)
All the best!

Excellent post. Thanks for sharing.

I initially became vegetarian on a bet. He said I would last about 3 weeks also. That was 15 years ago.

Don't mind most vegetarians at all. It's the ones who do it for attention and the ones who still eat fish that piss me off?!? like wtf is about? You feel fine eating fish but eating any other animal is murder. Fuck quorn as well, if you don't want to eat animals then don't eat fake animal meat.

Well, I do not mind at all financing these financially bereft meat farmers. I also don't mind financing the soya and lentil farmers, who are probably even more financially bereft, as, for fucking sure, the quorn burgers won't be the first to get snaffled at any barbecue I've been to.

Or maybe it is what it is, a protein substitute for those who don't eat meat. You know, because everybody needs a healthy amount of protein in their diet. Believe it or not, it's also a cheap, healthy, low fat option for those who eat meat as well.

I've been veggie for about 6 months. I've lost over a stone and not really missed anything (except maybe MacDonalds double cheese burgers). One thing that has surprised me though is how annoyed some people get with me when they find out I'm veggie. I've never really taken an interest in what other people eat yet some people take it like a personal insult.

Any vegans/veggies on the board who want a junk food fix I can recommend v revolution on Oldham street http://instagram.com/vrevolutionyeah

Not the kinda food I eat often (fake meat) but it's really good!!

I always laugh when I see on food "This XXX is not suitable for vegetarians"

This is b*llocks - all food is suitable for vegetarians - they just won't eat it

My personal view is that is not a natural state of being for humans but if you will punish yourself feel free to carry on but don't ever try and comment about my normal activity of eating meat in my meal or, if I'm eating out with you, complain about your lack of choice - self inflicted. no sympathy.

I have sympathy for the arguments of vegetarians. I would probably be one if it wasn't for the fact that I'm underweight and it could be risky to chop and change my diet whilst taking out what is my main source of protein.

It is clearly possible for most to live a reasonably healthy life without eating meat, okay maybe some would argue it's not optimally healthy but then neither is eating lots of meat for every meal. A lot of farming does seem brutal and unethical to some, but that depends on your personal philosophy about man's relationship with the animals around him. It's about where you draw the line on what is and isn't okay to eat, and how you should treat the animals you do choose to eat (if any). Everybody has differing opinions there and with varying amounts of justification.

I've heard a lot of back and forth arguing on this and my own opinion is that I don't think there is a right or wrong answer but if we do choose to eat meat then it should be with an effort to reduce any suffering to animals so it is minimal. I think most would agree on that.

I do notice though that there are a couple of obvious behaviours prevalent in some vegetarians and some meat-eaters:
- There are none as righteous as the converted. Some who do become vegetarians are vocal about it because they often see their opinions as well informed and therefore think people are meat-eaters because they aren't well informed or ignorant on the subject.
- A lot of meat-eaters (not all) do have some level of cognitive dissonance going on, they can be very defensive on the subject because they don't want to be forced to reconcile their morals on animal suffering with a lifestyle they enjoy.

I've also noticed a lot of my friends became vegetarians after seeing a video of animals being slaughtered on the internet. I can't help but ask these people, what were you expecting? Were you expecting it to look nice or enjoyable in some way? Of course it is going to look grim, but how it looks to us really has no bearing on the moral implications. Childbirth also looks really horrible, but you wouldn't use that as an argument against having children.

Anyway, as a disclaimer, this is mostly just my opinion and perspective on the subject.

tl;dr everybody should have the choice, animal suffering should be minimised where possible. People shouldn't be judged on what they decide to eat because the issue is complex and often nuanced.

I've said this before on here..... Jimmy Savile gets an easier ride on BlueMoon than vegetarians. I have no idea why there is such hostility to vegetarianism.
