Vegetarians - Meat replacements

Funnily enough breakfast is the easiest meal of the day for me to go without meat. I love crumpets with poached eggs, mushroom and cherry tomatoes.
It's after that my cravings kick in.

Ha, yes agreed. It might be a personal thing but when I was a meat eater the thought of having a spirulina bowl with Cucumber and Broccolli Would never have appealed to me. Now I get most of my veg and fruit portions in the bank by 8am.

I do get that a lot..... "so are your shoes / trainers leather?" "No"
Your belt? No
Car seats? No

And they will come out with some day to day item that has some animal by product in that you can't help but use.
My standard reply is I'm not claiming to be perfect - I just do as much as I can and I am happy within myself for doing just that.

For example I will only buy cheese that does not include rennet in its ingredients but I know if having a pizza when eating out, it will most likely be using cheese with rennet.
Same with (when in England) I will go to a Chippy and eat chips cooked in the same fat as chicken and fish

Exactly the same here. When people ask me why I have gone veggie I often cite to live healthier and for environmental factors and Ive received responses like ‘but you will travel across to europe to watch a footy match?’

Like you say its not me claiming to be a perfect person, just that I have identified an area in my life I can live better which might help offset, a little, all my other failings as a human being.

Yes! Someone said that to me once about flying to England and I replied "that plane was going whether I was on it or not...."

I have only been veggie for 2 years. Watched the game changers documentary on Netflix and although I took a lot of it with a pinch of salt, it was something which resonated with me, hence why I watched it in the first place.

Fully understand why you would not want to be preached to, who does. The only thing I would say as a defence is its quite difficult when you have experienced the tranformative benefits it is quite difficult not to encourage those close to you to try and adopt healthier ways of living. But I fully agree that does not mean you have to be solely veggie or vegan, but often the two seem to go hand in hand.

As for meals me and the missus are not the most adventurous of cooks but we do have stuff like Tofu Fajitas, Chick pea curry and lots of pasta dishes. We do eat a lot of the ‘fake’ sausages, chicken Kievs etc along with a portion of vegetable and sweet potatos.

The big change is in our breakfasts where we have a Spirulina based breakfast bowl with banana, Mango. Blueberries, broccolli, cucumber, spinach, chia, flax and pumpkin seeds. The taste and texture you get used to and it really sets you up for the day.
Seems like you have made a successful transition to vegetarianism so well done to you both.

Would you say you feel healthier being meat free?

A mate of mine suggested I watch the game changers so on your advice I will make sure i watch it. He told me it will change my outlook on life and what i eat. He looks a lot healthier nowadays having suffered i minor heart scare about 4 years ago. You still a meat eater but he he doesn't eat junk food much and tries to eat healthy.

At the moment I am eating healthier than I was but I know I'd only be lying to myself if I said I hadn't been eating too many takeaways and junk food in the past 12 months or so. My fault as I'm a competent cook, just succumb too easily to the convenience fast food sometimes. I'm a carer for my mum and she won't tolerate rubbish food so i have made and baked her good old traditional English food but i try and cook pasta, and burritos as long as she doesn't suss out it's "too foreign tasting"! Lol.

I will listen to good advice all day long. It's just the ones who preach and ram it down my throat about my meat eating sins so to speak, who get on my nerves. For now I'm a meat eating carnivore but i am interested in cutting out meat gradually to possibly become vegetarian.

I don't think I could ever become vegan because I enjoy dairy products too much, and I've tried almond and soya type milk in a cup of tea and they taste rank to me. And i don't ever fancy eating vegan cheese.

I used to eat Quorn in spag bols over 25 years ago as my ex Mrs wanted to try meat alternatives, We and thought Quorn to be quite tasty and I wouldn't be adverse to trying quorn sausages and similar products nowadays. But the thing is for now now i is eat farm traceable organic free range pork sausages which are absolutely delicious.

As for breakfast food I tend to try and eat a healthy breakfast and my favourites are a bowl of full fat Greek yoghurt with drizzled honey and mixed nuts with with a chopped banana added. I also like a bowl of porridge. Mornflake Organic oats are my favourite.

I've been a vegetarian for about 12 years now and vegan for the last 2 years. I don't tell anyone what to eat, never lecture anyone on what to eat either. I don't talk about it really, it's just my personal choice but one of my mates constantly tries to trip me up - is your car vegan? is that medicine vegan? your carpet is made from oil and getting oil kills the environment so you're not vegan etc. It's a bit boring but I don't make out I'm perfect I just do the best I can.

Anyway. absolutely no one goes veggie because they don't like the taste of meat. It tastes really nice! I love eating burgers and I WANT it to taste meaty. These meat alternatives do a superb job of that! The Beyond burgers are just a really tasty burger, regardless of what is in it. The Linda McCartney range are very good too. The Richmond vegan sausages are great because they taste like meat sausages. Also, the Vivera kebab meat is sensational and it's great knowing you can nail about 3 big kebabs with salad for tea and it be quite healthy!

Whilst these plant based options are great, if you're tempted to go veggie or vegan then make sure you don't miss out on some superb foods that can make food amazing. Fried tofu, lentils, nuts, seeds, falafel were all pretty new to me but as I learnt how to cook with them, the flavours and textures amazed me. Plus, cooking with them is healthier than any meat replacements. If you think about the great cuisines in the world (Chinese, Indian, Asian, Italian etc) then most of it uses a lot of plants anyway - onions, garlic, turmeric, ginger, basil, soy sauce, lemongrass etc. In many cases it's the plant based sauce which makes the meal tasty.

Regardless of what anyone does, in the longer term then we will have to become more plant based. The environmental impact of meat alone contributes a lot to climate change. Companies like Burger King plan to make half their menu plant based by 2030. For a company like this to do that shows how good they expect the meat alternatives to be.

Yes I definitely feel healthier for the changes in my lifestyle. Probably the main difference is the amount of energy I have.

I have always been reasonably active but like everyone as you get older you pop on a bit of weight, convince yourself its perfectly natural. Still I went for walks most weekends, a little jog here and there but then one day me and the missus went on a tough walk and it was such hard work, I just did not enjoy the experience. That was the turning point really, something I loved doing was being spoilt by my own lifestyle.

From that point on I started cutting back, exercising more and then went Veggy and I have never looked back since. That was the key change though, it massively improved my energy levels, allowing me to exercise more and also, a key thing mentioned in game changers, I recovered much quicker so was able to train more often. It was like a snowball effect really, the weight dropped off (lost 2 stone) and the running became more enjoyable, encouraging me to run more and more. Along with footy its the most enjoyable thing in my life now.

I tried to become Vegan initially and I share your sentiments. My love for Cheese, Milk Chocolate resulted in me failing quite quickly. I have changed my milk to Almond and Soya which I have got used to. It was not for me so not going to beat myself up about it.

To be honest mate it sounds like you eat pretty well and have identified where, if you want, you can improve. Being Veggy suited me as my personality, to enable change, requires lines in the sand to motivate me. But fully understand why others don’t.
