Is he leaving at the end of the season? I f**king hope so. That was a such a bad sub today it was criminal, this old french toast should be nowhere near our team, he's finished. Taking off Johnno for him with 20 minutes to go killed it for me.

Yet another end of career has-been on great money that can no longer hack it

He is a good addition to have there, hes solid. He will just stand there right? They aint gettin past him :p

-- Sun Apr 18, 2010 1:08 am --

Did you watch the last 20 mins? We looked at our most threatening going forward AFTER the substitutions.

are you lot joking, or does the game really look that different to different people?

I could have sworn, that for 10 minutes solid, we were pinned right back, and nani was working onuoha constantly. Viera comes on, and suddenly we had them pinned back. probably because AJ couldn't help out onuoha as much as he needed, and because, once we had three in the midfield, we could actually get out, fight for the midfield and get the ball moving forward.

I think mancini was out done today, largely because united had midfielders who could pass better than ours, and more of them. and they had genuine threats on the bench, we had swp who ran at evra pretty well, but couldn't fashion a chance. If he made a mistake it was probably the other two subs, swp and ireland both at fault in their goal.

I thought it was an odd sub when it happened as it would leave us with no right winged outlet. I think swapping AJ to the left (bellers was having no luck against rat face) and AJ could not hack the pace of evra. Take bellers off for SWP as he always skins evra and always getting fouled. I would have brought barry off for vieira, as they do pretty much the same job and barry was not that effective.
The problem with vieira is people still expect him to be the same as he was 5 years ago.

Say what you want but he was involved in two of our closest chances yesterday He should have started IMHO

This was the glaring and fundamental difference all game for me.

Thought that Viera made a difference when he came on. We were being bossed by the rags at the time. Hindsight and all that, but I wonder whether we should have gone for a three man midfield and not allowed United to dictate so much play. Until Viera appeared I felt that we just relied on counter attacking a side that seemed to be largely in control!

He wasn't brought on for his pace, his skill, his eye to pick a pass or shore up the midfield. We had the game in the bag really, a point was enough to end there dreams and still keep us in good contention for 4th.

He was brought on for his experience, the experience in the big games. If you think anything else, you clearly are misguided.

Adds the experience we lack in the midfield but I think we will buy someone younger more agile with the experience to replace Vieira. We wont get what we want from him next season. I hope De Jong has looked at Vieira closely since he has been at the club because he would of picked up something from him. In the longterm De Jong could end up being the younger Vieira we have wanted at the club. I still think someone with power and speed will be added to the squad in the summer.

We didn't have enough players with 'know-how' yesterday. Rags: Giggs, Scholes, Chuckle - been there and done it loads of times.

Taggart: We have won loads of games 1-0 over the years.

This is something that we need to get our heads around, also as fans. Sometimes it is OK to keep it tight, concentrate and take a chance if you get it. In fairness Mancini seems as though he is trying to instil this foreign concept, as Sven did. I remember the latter getting particularly frustrated at our inability to avoid defeat when things weren't going our way. Maybe we (fans) are part of the problem? Even yesterday you could hear the groans of disapproval every time we tried to be patient and keep possession.

Although the rags have often played with great passion and purpose, their success has probably relied more on resilience and thier ability to see out games over the years.
