Villarreal (A) | CL | Post Match Thread

Who was it - what did she say? I’m guessing Lucy Ward? I’m out of the country so haven’t watched on TNT.
No it was Reshmin Chowdhury. As soon as the game finished she was saying how bad our away record has been recently in the chumps league. Completely negative and giving little credit for a comfortable win on the night. IIRC she was pretty down on us after the draw against Monaco too. If it had been the dippers she would have been singing a different tune.
I don't mind commentators who don't blow smoke up our arses but this was just a continuation of the negative shit we have had on BT Sport/TNT since the takeover.

She really isn't and even if looked like peak Margot Robbie what she was saying would still be utter drivel. She also works for Talksport which shows the level of insight she has. The role of a presenter should really be to draw interesting insight from pundits and interviewees (players and managers) and not to bring down the whole atmosphere with cherry picked factoids that have little relevance to what has actually happened in the match.

Away wins aren’t even that important in the CL.

The only away game we won when we won the CL was the very first group game at Sevilla. We drew ever other away game all the way through.

You could still easily draw all away games in this new 8-game League Phase and finish in the top 8.

Look at 2020-21, we won every away game in the CL that season and ended up losing the final away, so what was the point?

You could as you say draw every away game and finish in the top 8 or equally bottom

I doubt it, there’s been relatively few draws overall so to finish top 8 I’d think you’ve got to win at least 1 probably at least 2 of your aways, I think. Mind you you’re right about 22/23, I’d forgotten we had drawn 5 successive aways after the win at Sevilla, this new format isn’t as forgiving - last year 4 wins and 4 draws would have scraped you in 8th place but this year with so few draws I doubt it would

Good 1st half, brilliantly worked team goals but we were horrible in the 2nd half.. especially after Nico Gonzalez went off.

Hope it's not too bad.. but that shows how important Nico is to our team defensively!
You know, I have been really busy at work this week so I have only just watched the whole match just now, Sunday morning. I knew this was the consensus of opinion but watching afterwards for myself I slightly disagree. We didn’t need to be better in the second half to win it but we still had a lot of control in the game and created chances even after Nico González came off. It was a great professional champions league away performance against a decent (not top) team. Pep is getting us back on track.
