'For that price' doesnt mean anything, he is either rated or not , if Pep thinks hes the best we can get and we can afford him then we should get him. Transfer fees are pretty meaningless now with pretty average premier league plaers going for £30 mill
 
He has pace, height, strength and is good on the ball and is an attacking threat. Would be a class addition.

It's still over-inflated price for a player who isn't in the greatest form and at this time has a questionable attitude and is still pining for a move to Liverpool (they are more in desperate need for defenders than we are at this stage of the season).

Is any player truly worth the ridiculous amounts being paid today? I don't think so, but the buying clubs obviously do & that sets the market rates.
 
I think he's off to the Dippers but I'd love Van Dijk here or some player of a similar ilk.

I think too many people, on this and the Sanchez threads, are still of the old mind set of having a starting 11 and squad players.

The fact is you need around 16 players all capable of being 1st team players and then squad fillers who will add depth to the side.

The likes of Bravo, Danilo, Mangala and Delph are all squad fillers. By that I mean very good players who will cover injuries and play a good number of games. However, they are never going to be the first names on the team sheet when we have a fully fit squad.

Then we have the likes of Vinny, Gundogan, Bernardo and Jesus who are all more than good enough to hold a regular starting position in the side. These are not back-up players, they are crucial first team players who ensure that there is not a huge drop off in quality when the likes of Kun, Sterling and Silva etc are rested. They also provide the competition to the other players.

IMO, we could do with another 3 first team players and the only player from the current squad who it would deeply affect is Vinny. However, the only reason we need a CB is due to his injury problems in the first place.

Signing Sanchez, Van Dijk or another top CB and a defensive midfielder would see us through to the end of next season IMO.
 
If he comes, does he make the staring 11? Who drops? Defense isn't something that is rotated often. Perhaps this is why he or others may be less enthusiastic on joining us? I don't see either of Stones nor Otamendi being dropped.
 
I think by the looks of it this is the defender Pep and Txiki have picked out and initially Van Dijk would be a summer transfer target, but because Liverpool are so keen it has forced our hand and we now have to move in January.

£70m is excessive though.

I reckon we could get Jerome Boateng for less than that.

Boateng is 31 and a crock, you'd fucking hope so.
