When you put it like that, it looks as though rather than not wanting to sell that Southampton were more pissed that those comments came out(it does appear Liverpool lean on players to give soundbites more than other clubs will) thus cooling our interest and ending their hopes of a bidding war between the clubs.

We could step back in with an 'including add ons' bid.

But from what we understand on Blue Moon Joe`s position was not football connected and the powers that be told Pep they wanted him out.How much truth there is in that I`ve no idea. However, that has come from two distinguished Blue Mooners.
As far as Mango goes his distribution is on par with Joleon ie very telegraphic.I`m not certain he`s the type of player Pep wants, but who knows maybe another season with us and then we can see if Pep can produce miracles. ;)
The point about Joe was just an aside to reinforce the point that you don't really know whether a player can adapt if you don't at least give them the opportunity. No idea whether he left due to other stuff, I find it difficult to believe tbh but who knows. Tons of people were saying Joe would be a gonner as soon as Pep was announced for footballing reasons so I find that to be more believable. I think even Joe's biggest fans have now moved on from the debate now anyway. Personally I don't mind Mangala because I think he has the potential to be a solid defender and I think we lack that at times but I can't imagine Pep ever being enthusiastic about him.

It's very very likely you are correct but if he was to produce something in this pre season, that could change.

What we really need is another commanding figure, the likes of Mangler, Stones, Otamendi can play next to. But other than VVD I can't think of anyone who fits that bill.

I can see clearly why pep/owners wanted him gone 1.Got too big for his boots alot of shouting look at me type caracter, not enough backing the big mouth up 2.Shampoo adverts come on get a grip your a footballer not a model 3.never ever get down to his left handside, anytime anything went that side 9/10 goal 4.distribution was poor always taking to long with the ball, you watch ederson and de gea so quick at getting rid.
Mangala and want too see get a chance absolute beast, with correct coaching he coukd be the real deal, ask Costa what his pocket looks like, he never got the chance, give him till January if its still not working out get rid

Well Pep obviously likes VVD, we are throwing money around this summer so it looks like we are desperately trying to give Pep the squad to compete right at the very top of Europe so I'm surprised we aren't all over him before Southampton cave in to Liverpool. I assume it has reached a stage with VVD that whilst Liverpool may be his preferred destination, he has burnt his bridges and pretty much needs a move so I am sure he would come to us and I am sure Southampton would rather deal with us. Klopp turned his head when they met but as you said earlier, it's not as if he isn't going to be impressed if he meets Pep. We should just go for it and give ourselves the chance of a huge season now, whilst we have Pep in charge. I'd hate for him to leave after three years with most of it being a long transitional period because we didn't sort out the whole defence when we needed to. I still think we will be underwhelming overall if we have to play a significant number of games or more to the point any truly significant games (ie Monaco at home) with Stones and Otamendi as our CB partnership, no matter who we have signed as full-backs and no matter how many attacking options we have.

I haven't a scooby what our budget actually is though so no idea if we can even bid for him.

We only have the titbits of info which 'itks' on here convey, but we don't even know if the source feeding them knows.

If we have promised Sanchez we will do what it takes to sign him, then City wouldn't even know what the budget is.

True. I hope we don't waste a significant amount on some compromise of a player though who is no better than what we already have. It'd be a totally false economy. It's going to be an interesting couple of weeks.

Agree on both counts.

I'd be ok with a young world prodigy, who everyone is chasing, as a compromise, but ffs no more Otamendi's.
