Virgil van Dijk

I'm conscious of going too far off topic but most of those players aren't remotely comparable to what we would have to pay to acquire any of your initial list. ie: the transfer fee paid by Juve for an often injured, 30 year old Medhi Benati, has no bearing whatsoever on what we would need to pay as Manchester City, with the premium that teams demand of us, for up and coming players who everyone wants (with the probable exception of De Virj given his contract situation.)
Agreed on the topic derailment so is swing back to Virgil who I think is overpriced at 70 million.

I just gave a list of most of the major transfers at the position. These are comparable to the guys I listed. I.e. good ballplaying CBs.

Bonucci, Rudiger, Conti, Skrinier, Lindelof, Sule, Sanchez. These were the best CBs to move last year. None cost over 45 million. City is not the only team that get premium priced. Most top teams do. Including United Chelsea, Barca, PSG, Real, AC Milan etc.

A lot of those guys bought CBs last year. None paid 45 million. The notion that a price point only 2 players at that position have exceeded is somehow pittance is just asinine.

70 million is ridiculous money to pay for any CB. I simply disagree any CB is worth over 45 million. Thankfully, the market (as crazy as it is) still agrees with me for the most part.

Folks are just trying to normalize ridiculous payments.

the price does not really matter as long as the player is good enough.
Precisely. Last summer we were getting slagged off for signing £50m full backs, the year before it was the same with a £50m CH and before that it was a £50m winger who was still learning his game. The 'experts' got it badly wrong as each player signed was all about making a team rather than performing one particular role. These 'experts' are remaining quiet now as the penny has finally dropped with them and they now realise that whatever we pay for a player will be like paying for a random piece of a jigsaw puzzle.

Get the big bastad in! Something about him.

A good 5 years. Vinny can coatch him.

Don’t worry about the price.

Not our money.

£50m for Kyle Walker and Mendy was ridiculous money considering they are fullbacks, but no one is complaining now.

32 million for Mangala was ridiculous money, but no one is complaining now either. So was 50 million for Torres or Luiz.It is not like there is a bureau of complaint for one to go file a complaint.

Do I still think Walker and Mendy were excessive? Absolutely! Am I glad about their peeformances? You bet!

I think in the end some don't care about the money issue while others do. Or to put it more accurately, some are selective about when they care. Others are more general about it.

I fall in the latter group.

Below is the the list and cost of most of the major Central defender who moved last season:
Davidson Sanchez 42 million
Lindelof 35 million
Harry Maguire 17 million
Nathan Ale 22 million
Bruno indi 7 million
Rudoger 35 million
Bonucci 40 million
Antonio Conti 25 Million
Skriniar 30 million
Benatia 17 million
Juan Jesus 8 million

As you can see it ranged from straight loans to at the highest 42 million. No one cracked 45 million. So the notion that the guys I suggested 'all' might, is ludicrous.

I don't know if a 52 million Koulibally bid was rejected. I generally don't believe paper made up bod stories. But going by the list of actually accepted offers, its easy to see that its unlikely most will cost over 45 million.

And as the list above shows, you don't have to be from the 2nd division to cost less than 45 million. As a matter of fact, costing more than 45 million is the aberration.

People don't pay excessively for defenders because defending is often more about coaching, while attacking is more about talent.
There's a European club price.

Then there's a price for PL clubs.

Then there's a price for City.

This surely can't be news to you?
