Virgil van Dijk

If we need the money for other positions and we have an oil tanker of cash available I'd like to think it's a monumentally massive world record bid pending

Stones has already performed at a much higher level that VVD, simply because it's asked of him at City.

I still feel City felt they could take it or leave it with VVD, because we need the money in other positions.

Not having that. Since when has Stones commanded our back line like VVD did last season in a worse team?

Van Dijk would be a good signing, but for some people to still hold onto Bonucci in hope, guys... just let it go. He is staying at juve 100%.

If we don't get Van Dijk, there are other alternatives... Laporte, Davinson Sanchez, Manolas, Rudiger, Jonathan Tah, I am sure pep will have plenty to ponder.

Completely agree, also think the keeper being able to save a shot or two would of helped the defence too.

Definitely. Without going over old ground, the goalkeeper situation definitely unsettled the defence. You could see the lack of communication and confidence in games. Otamendi had a good season last year and his stats back that up, next to VK he looked the real deal. As we know Kompany's injury record is a concern, but with Stones, Otamendi and Kompany in the squad, Van Dijk probably decided he'd rather go somewhere where he is guaranteed to play most weeks. Plus Liverpool have most of the old Southampton squad anyway so he'll feel at home.

He's gone for the beautiful #istory.

Of course Liverpool fans won't mention the near central defender world record signing fee, and his wages that will smash Liverpool's wage structure.

Nothing like they've been complaining about City's spending since Sheikh Mansour took over.

We don't know he is staying at Juve 100%

Gutted to miss out on him, all the attributes to be the best defender in the league for the next few years, and is a great age. He'll be a great signing for Liverpool. No use saying "we didn't want him anyway" he's have been a great addition to the squad.

Anyway, good luck to Liverpool, they've got themselves a great player. Fingers crossed we've got someone else just as good lined up.

A fool because I personally think Chiellini is better than Bonucci?

I bet you'd have a hard time finding a Juve supporter that would keep Chiellini over Bonuci.
Matter of fact I was talking to three old Juve supporters yesterday that all said Chiellini was finished and it's time for him to leave.

Yeah agree and Pep has a record of rather going for midfielders wingers or strikers before a defender. So Sanchez or pushing the boat out in trying to get Mbappe will do me.
...if and only if we get the deals done. Both potential deals seem to have their areas of difficulty though.

(sorry if this tweet was already posted) Guy from the Anfield Wrap saying he thinks City's interest wasn't that big... Agent playing games with the media to get Liverpool moving on a deal...

This makes sense, for the past couple of weeks the sources who are closest to the club always said after Bernardo it would be Ederson, then Mendy, then Walker. Although we've had some interest in VVD going back to January window, I think VK coming good for last two months has made a top CB signing this summer not a priority. VVD going to City story came from nowhere really (clearly the work of his Agent or maybe even Southampton knowing he wants Liverpool)...

Absolutely!
It's all small margins but we missed so many chances to win games when in total control last season. Hitting the posts 500 times as well doesn't help either!
Hopefully our new keeper is a shot stopper and with the help of 2 upgraded full backs I'm sure we can cope if vinnie gets crocked again.
I really can't see another season where every shot at our goal seems to go in and where we miss so many golden chances.

If (and it's a pretty big if) Chelsea & ourselves were after VVD and he's picked Liverpool then it's a bit of a coup for them really. Surprised some on here don't rate him, he's a monster & I think he'd have suited our style perfectly - he'll significantly improve Liverpools defence. Thought they would struggle to compete with other PL rivals for the big signings & might be forced a bit further afield to find less well known talent - good effort if they complete this deal in my opinion.

Is he worth £50/60m? No. Doesn't mean he'd be a bad purchase though. Pogba isn't worth £89m, but United could afford him & he improves their first 11, so he'll end up being a good purchase eventually.

Do we really need a CB, though?

We looked great in those final two months with Vinny back and even Otamendi looked a class act.

Imagine what Vinny will do for Stones, the best exponent of what Pep is trying to achieve.

Irrespective of Vinny's fitness issues, our failings last season were down to not scoring enough and taking our chances, not him missing.

It was the nature of how we conceded, not the amount (certainly in relation to Spurs) which coloured the narrative of last season.

My opinion is that two world class full backs and the extra firepower will take less onus on us having to have Baresi and Maldini at the back.

Save the £60m, keep Mangala or play Tosin if we have to, and put it down towards securing Mbappe and Sanchez.

If we were going to get both Mbappe and Sanchez then I would quickly forget about VVD. However, the chance of that happening is next to zero. In fact, the chance of even one of these happening is looking rather slim right now. If the end of the transfer window comes and we end up missing out on Sanchez, Mbappe and Bonucci then failing to sign VVD is going to be an even greater blow.

I think pep wouldn't be that stupid to think that signing a centre back isn't a priority due to kompany playing. It would be a very naive outlook on the squad. We need a centre back, its clearly obvious.
