Taking the wife (she doesn’t know) to Rome first weekend in August, looked at getting the Roma pass 72 hours going on a Friday early coming back late on Sunday. Is this pass worth it? I plan to walk to most sites Vatican, Coliseum etc and to take in what Rome has to offer these two places are top of my list to visit. Where else would people recommend going in museums etc.
Also any places to eat maybe I could book a nice restaurant on the Saturday night, this trip is going to give me loads of brownie points she thinks we are going to a camping festival .

Went on my own a couple of years ago after falling out with the wife, was already booked, couldn't transfer so thought fuck it and went. Had a great time, didn't get a pass just wondered around and saw things at my own leisure. Just bought a metro ticket, unlimited travel, went as i pleased, all the main sites have a stop at them which makes getting around really easy.
Didn't book any restaurants just ate where i fancied, outside the Vatican was fucking expensive though so be warned!! The Vatican museum will take all day to view so wear something comfortable on your feet.
Went to the Vatican, St Peters square, Trevi fountain (do this in the evening, stunning at night), Coliseum plus much much more.

Highly recommend a restaurant called Vecchia Roma on Via Ferrucio. It was recommended to me by a few friends who've been. It's reasonably priced and the food is excellent. Make sure you book a table though as when we went there was a big queue to get in

There's a stand to the right of the Trevi fountain that does the best canoli in the world. Thank me later.

Its a wonderful city. The Sistine chapel is an absolute must see. Not many things in the world I can honestly say were jaw dropping, but this deserves that description. Unbelievable that a human being was able to produce such work. Other than that, you have listed the key things. The Coleseum and ruins of the Forum etc are worth a good morning/afternoon. Look seriously at pre booking stuff before you go. The queues are horrendous and it is worth paying a bit more to skip the queue. Oh, and watch the beggars and gypsys. Rome is the only city in the world i have had bother. Wouldn't put me off going back though. As a previous poster said, have a look at TripAdvisor for eats but we didn't book anything and had some great meals. Be ready for some serious heat - particularly if you are walking a lot. August is the month the locals go on holiday to cooler climes.

If I get this Roma pass it seems I can get in two museums free so thinking Vatican and coliseum you don’t have to queue to get a ticket but then you queue to get in the thing itself unless you book these things separate which can get expensive

The area around the Vatican will be hammered on The Sunday - Feast of The Transfiguration of The Lord, quite a "biggie" in the Catholic calendar. Mass will almost certainly be said by Pope Francis in The Basillica that day. Tickets are free but have to be ordered beforehand.
If you want to do something slightly different, but equally wonderful, a train from Rome to the walled village of Casperia is something you'd both love. It's an hour's journey but well worth it - Rome will be heaving in August and you'll find it very, very hot and possibly not the experience you want. That said, it has some of, if not the best musea in the world and there is so much to see. You could combine both - take the train out to Casperia Friday, spend a wonderful evening there eating, overlooking the amazing views from the mountainside, breakfast there then take train into Rome and hit the tourist stuff. Have a great trip whatever you do.

Have to echo the above about the Sistine Chapel. We qued for ages with me, the not very arty one, thinking this better be worth it! But it's mind blowing. It looks almost 3D. Incredible stuff.
