Visiting Rome

A little tip that will save you ages in the Colosseum queue. Go around the corner to the Palatine Hill, you get a joint ticket there for both. When you go to the Colosseum DO NOT join the queue for tickets but go straight through to the turnstiles and show your ticket.

i thought the palatine hill was more impressive to be honest. colliseum in verona was much more interesting. just ignore the touts outside offering a great deal. like someone said buy elsewhere and just join the queue. lovely city and i quite liked the lucky lucky man who told my then gf i was 25 ;-) changed his mind when i gave him 2 euros for the bracelet

Taking notes keep the tips coming, as for the train ride I think fitting that in might be a bit too much, I just want to take in the history of it all so there’s no rush to get in certain things as long as I get in the coliseum and Vatican/Sistine chapel the wife will be happy with drinking and eating.

I was in Rome last week for a couple of days on business.
Take the train from the airport into the city. 12 Euros each, and half the time and price of a taxi.
Try the open top, hop on, hop off bus tour. About half a dozen different companies operating, and I think they all do a similar route.
Good value, and you get to see everything at your own pace.
Restaurants everywhere, but quite pricey.
Queues at the Vatican were ridiculous, but you’ll be approached by guides offering tickets to jump the them. Don’t know if they’re genuine.
It’s a beautiful city, you can’t fail to enjoy it.

Watch crossing the road.
Only slightly better than Naples.
Queue's are a nightmare.
The Vatican museum a nightmare but great once you are in.
Do the museum first.
After the Sistine Chapel you get straight in to the Vatican.
I paid extra for the English guides for the museum tour.
Did it's purpose of getting in quicker but make sure you stay near your guide until you are in the Vatican Museum.

Honestly the best place I have ever been

The Sistine chapel is incredible. Get to the vatican early as St. Peter’s basilica sometimes closes around lunch time, so you might miss out like we did.

I liked the coliseum but probably wouldn’t go inside again (although there was quite a bit of work going on inside when we went)

Avoid restaurants on the main streets near touristy places. Wander down a side street and you will find some brilliant places to eat and much cheaper.

Tip for travel, use the underground metro. It’s absolutely fantastic and cheap.

One more tip for you. Take some good comfy shoes!!! You will walk miles and miles
