Or if you are short of time, follow this link and have a look at the section 'Re-Emergence of the Russian Challenge', which summarises in 4 pages why it's Putin that is the ****. The book may already be 7 years old but Shekhovtsov's study is still relevant.

I can also recommend Killer in the Kremlin by John Sweeney and Nothing is True and Everything is Possible by Peter Pomerantsev.
The latter is an incredible, terrifying book.

The latter is an incredible, terrifying book.
I thought that Pomerantsev book was extraordinary. It's like Russia had - at that point in time - been turned into a vast theme park designed by David Lynch. And since he wrote it things have become even worse, of course!
I have the John Sweeney book too (found in charity shop for £1) but haven't got around to it yet.
