last season I think we could not believe we landed robinho. The full extent of the takeover hadn't quite sunk in with us all.
I think a lot of the fans, players, manager and even owners were somewhat pandering to robinho. I also feel there was an arrogance on his behalf of doing us a favour by gracing us with his presence. Now before you tear me limb from limb hear me out.
He was the star attraction, the figure head of the takeover and to a manager under pressure clearly undropable. He didn't preform well in many away games but was outstanding at home. It reminded me of kinkladze in that he became bigger than the club and the focus of everyones attention on match day.
The kinkladze situation ended in relegation and the loss of a fans hero. Now here's the good bit. This season we have signed so many good players the focus on robinho will diminish this giving the lad more breathing space while at the same time providing the pressure on him to play well every game. He says he wants to be the best player in the world now he has the teamates and platform to prove it.
So his mate elano has gone. So what we have replaced him with quality premier league players. For me I would not start robinho against Blackburn as I think our squad has better options in tackling a fat Sam team. That does not mean I don't rate him, but I think Hughes must be ruthless and pick a team to win each game. Robinho would be the first name on the team sheet against wolves at home cos he will destroy them, but for me we now have options for certain games and Blackburn, Stoke and Bolton away are the games to bench him.
For the record I love watching him play but the time for walking on egg shells around him has gone. His time to show the world what he can do in the toughest league on the planet has arrived.
Come on city!
Correctamundo!
Every team we play, every game, is different and a different set up/team/tactics should be employed for each one of those different games! Not just Blackburn, Stoke and Bolton but the two best teams at colsing you down, putting presure on you to make mistakes, the hardest teams in the league to play against- Chelsea and United! Robinho's most anonymous games for us were against these 2 last season, home and away (apart from the free-kick v Chelsea)!and with his style of play its as though we've had a man sent off even though he's on the pitch against these types of teams!
For the majority of games this season i think the line-up should be (with players we actually have):
---------------Given-------------
Richards--Kompany--Toure--Bridge
--------------De Jong------------
--------Ireland--------Barry------
-Tevez-----Adebayor-----Robinho-
however, against teams where you need all 11 men working their socks off or you'll be lucky to even get a draw (Liverpool and Arsenal are not really in this catagory as they seem to allow opposition to have the ball a little bit more and play a slower game themselves), i think the line-up should be (with players we actually have):
---------------Given-------------
Richards--Kompany--Toure--Bridge
--------De Jong----Barry---------
-----SWP----Ireland----Tevez----
------------Adebayor------------
here dont employ any wingers as such, narrow the pitch down and have a team full of grafters who'll put the shift it and make it difficult for these teams to play their usual game - play them at their own game! it might not work all the time but i think it will be better than playing an open game against all of these teams and getting beat!
