War Films

I must agree with a previous poster. Klimov's Come and See is easily the most moving war picture I've seen. No "Hollywood" film comes near it, however good parts of Saving von Ryan's Daughter's Privates Express are.

This is up there, trust me. Just don't show it to anyone sensitive.

Not being a macho, manly, man type fellow I don't really like war films as such, although I do like a good love story set against the backdrop of war.

A very long engagement and Atonement are two of my favourites.

The final scene of Blackadder goes fourth is very moving too.

Can anyone shed a bit of light on what was distorted in respect of the story of The Patriot. My knowledge of the War of Independence is about 1 out of 100.....
Where to start!

The whole premise of the film is very misleading, America Vs The British,it was actually much more of a civil war between Patriots and Loyalists. The British army was caught up in a war with the French over the Spice Islands at the time and so was stretched pretty thin. I think I am right in saying that there was only one company of regular British soldiers actually fighting in the war of independence and they beat the Patriots pretty much every time they engaged with them!

Like I say, most of the fighting was actually Colonials Vs Colonials.
No it wasn't, there was more fighting with the British than the loyalists. The first and last battles were lost by the British. Don't bother arguing beause i did half of my AS study in History on this. I probably know a lot more than you in this war.

Oooooooo! Calm down lad,you probably do know much more than me on this subject because my "knowledge" has been gleaned entirely from the local pub bore/nutter . I have no personal interest in this subject at all really but made up bollocks always beat facts.FACT!

Oh and "Don't even try and argue because I've done it for my AS level"is the best comeback I've heard for a while.

Toodle pip.

Well don't make out to be so sure if you gained this knowledge from aload of pissed up men. I thought you'd answer to try and defend the dignity you had left thats wgy I put that at the end, Adios.

Platoon is amazing. I have had many vets of Vietnam in my pub tell me that it is very difficult for them to watch Platoon because it is such a realistic portrayal of the life they lived in Vietnam.

Johnny Got His Gun isn't exactly a "war" movie, and it is terribly depressing, but I love it.

Also:

Midway
The Bridge At Remagen
Kelly's Heroes (Donald Sutherland - PURE BRILLIANCE)
The Fighting Seabees
