Was Roy Keane overrated?

To be fair I think Scholes was a genuinely skilled technical footballer. Beckham was overrated, Giggs' ability was 99 percent due to being unusually fast for a footballer in his generation.
You have to be fast to get to your brothers wife before the brother returns home!!

How did they win so much ?

They had zero competition. They had their pick of young players and top players from other teams. They intimidated refs and the FA. Cheated.

That being said - Giggs and Keane were quality players unfortunately. Beckham massively overrated - David Bentley but with more celeb appeal

While we're on the subject, Bryan Robson WAS hugely overrated. Had a couple of good seasons in the mid 80s them did fuck all for the rest of his career apart from being injured and getting pissed every night. Did bugger all for England, played like he was hungover but was nicknamed Captain Marvel by the press for reasons I can never quite fathom.

Ohhhh I don't know about that he was a good player and a good captain for them, we can at least admit that every now and then a decent player popped up for them.

As a footballer he was poor tbh. As a leader of men, pulling players up, getting the team to work, he was very good.

You didn't necessarily have to be a good footballer in those days. You could win the league with about 25% of the talent we have in our team nowadays, and the rest was made up by threatening behaviour.... towards the opposition, the refs, the PL. Combatative I think they called it. Exciting. Best in the world.

I thought it was thuggery. I really liked arsenal, lots of skill and talent but they were basically kicked around the pitch when they played utd. Keane made sure that happened.

He was a very good player in his time, he had drive and leadership too. I also like listening to him talk as there is no bullshit - he'll call it as it is no matter who he upsets.

That would be the Arsenal team of Keown,Adams,Winterburn , Vieira and Petit ?? Not many shrinking violets there

Football was different back then. Far more physical and intimidating. Refs were of a very poor standard. Would let loads go as afraid to make big decisions.

Keane at Forest was often on the right wing. Did a lot more running as a young player and had a decent cross. I remember when Forest got relegated he was the player that was clearly worth taking and remember city fans saying he would be ideal as a winger for us to provide crosses for Nial Quinn.

Obviously he didn't end up a winger and was a midfield enforcer. It doesn't really transfer to modern football. He'd be a DM but would probably get 4 or 5 red cards a season with modern refs and var. But in his era all teams needed that sort of player.

I remember Bergkamp, Henry, Overmars, the style they played, Wenger more progressive, the vastly more attractive football they played... But you had to fight in this league, literally.

And Viera, could actually play football to quite a high level, not so Keane.
