Was Roy Keane overrated?

They had zero competition. They had their pick of young players and top players from other teams. They intimidated refs and the FA. Cheated.

That being said - Giggs and Keane were quality players unfortunately. Beckham massively overrated - David Bentley but with more celeb appeal
They had to beat an Arsenal Team that was full of French world cup winners and two of Englands best ever center backs in Adams and Cambell! not to mention Berkamp, Overmars, David Seaman or Ashley Cole! And Arsene Wenger managing them!

To say they had no competition is silly.

...That's why they needed 12 men on the field

The question to ask is, if a 23 year old Roy Keane was available today, would you want him in your side and the answer is a resounding ‘Yes please’ from all but the bitterest of an unusually bitter fan base.
Giggs too, probably Beckham.

It’s okay to acknowledge greatness in old rivals. You look like a know-nothing fool if you suggest that Keane was overrated, or anything other than a great of the modern game.

Decent pundit too.

They had competition from Arsenal for about 3 years maximum.

And after Arsenal went unbeaten, the next season they went to OT and we saw the most blatant cheating done by a referee we've ever seen. That game was pure corruption. See my original "cheated" comment.

Great Post.
Brian Clough signed Roy Keane.from amauter league Irish football
And placed him in.on his debut at Anfield.Liverpool away.
This was at a time when Liverpool were the greatest team in England
And Nottingham Forest were bouncing...the hate between forest and Liverpool fans was off the scale..I was working on Notts at the time..one forest fans a woman told me she had seen a Liverpool fan break a forest lads leg.,..
Brian Clough trusted Roy Keanne to be his central midfield man
At Anfield.away.on his debut.
I've spoken to Liverpool fans over the years who remember his debut performance
Roy Keanne was a unit.a central midfield unit...one of the best I've ever seen play the game
And I can remember Derby days with utd, when Keane Ran the game.
Dictated.Controlled it.
A brilliant central midfield player
Brilliant.

That rag v dipper rivalry is way overrated. Have they ever went neck and neck in a title race.

Once in recent memory. Think it was under Benitez. May have been the "facts" season.

Keane was not over rated in my opinion. CL semi away against Juventus sticks in the memory

I constantly hear pundits talking about Roy Keane like he was some kind of galactico all-timer. Frankly he wasn't. Even at the time, I felt he was more a Vinnie Jones character, i.e., physically aggressive and intimidating, but as a technical footballer, pretty average. I cnanot be alone in this?

You won’t be alone but you’ll be in a large minority.

Not a galatico by anyone's metric - and the thugs assault on Haaland will live with most Blues for our lifetime.
But he was the appitomy of the era - specifically what his manger wanted, a phsyco to bully teams and refs

Keane was a player. If you cant see that, you should be on a site about stamp collecting ffs. I get you hate him but Jesus wept.

The Penny Black is overrated. Discuss.

And Scholes same deal.

A prime Keane walks into any of the last 10 teams that have won the champions league, quality player but also a fucking headcase.

Controversial opinion alert coming up but for me, the biggest crime with the Haaland Snr assault wasn’t the tackle itself, but the utter fucking shithouse behaviour of Alfie’s so called teammates. Not one of them went near Keane afterwards. Not one.
If one of ours had done that to Beckham or Scholes, Keane would have broken their legs before they had chance to get sent off.
Proper captain, best central midfielder of his generation.
Our team in those days was full to the brim of likeable cowards.

Yep… in rugby league, Keane would have left that pitch with a fat, flat, bloody nose, black eye and shirt ripped.
