Water!

An effort is made to get fluoride into the water supply. Why on earth would you then want to go and filter it out!?
And why is fluoride added exactly?

Fluorine is one of the most reactive elements on the planet, why do we need it in water?
Because it's am extremely affordable way of looking after the public's teeth. Optimal fluoridation has been conclusively demonstrated to have a positive impact on health, including drastically reducing the number of children having to undergo general anaesthetic for dental treatment.
The one point you make there which is correct is that there has been reduced teeth decay in children.
Which could be due to better education or dental care or the work put in to mothers about the importance of looking after teeth.

However as an adult, as are most of the population, I'm appalled that the nanny state sees fit to poison my water with such an acidic and reactive element, which in turn leads to acidic water that has a great affect on my health.

Sledgehammer to crack a nut methinks whilst also poisoning our bodies with acids.

I'm going to presume that that is a joke

I like it cold and wet. The bottled stuff is funny, especially in a country like ours where it rains more or less forever. But I'd be lying to say I've never bought it. You just fancy it sometimes and there is no sink on the job.

Part of my job is to literally check the water leaving various reservoirs before the water reaches the home. Would be a bit hypocritical if I didn't drink tap water.

Tap water is better for you, cheaper and better for the environment when compared to bottled water. Water purifiers aren't always good either...they take out necessary minerals from the water that your body needs.

Am I right in saying that British tap water is one of the heaviest regulated in the world in terms of standards?

I've heard that quite a few times.

Not drinking tap water to me at least is absolute madness.
I'm in Aus so I can't speak for Britain. But countries like Aus and (prob) England have very strict guidelines on tap water. Chlorine levels are monitored very closely 24/7.

Just buy a reverse osmosis plant if you're that bothered.
I worked at one up until a few months ago. Apparently you'll die after several days if you just drink (near) purified water...draws all the important salts/minerals out of your body. So I was told anyway ;)

Tap water is the best choice unless you're really sensitive to the taste/smell of chlorine.

LOL Spent years drinking RO water.
I was just something I was told. The RO water we produced was made in a huge factory and had 3 stages. The water needed to be almost completely pure as we sent it to the nearby steelworks. RO water produced for drinking probably isn't filtered as much as what we required for industrial use.

The point remains, tap water is the best option. Companies want to scare you into thinking it has harmful levels of toxins so you buy their products.

Yeah, you're right. It must be a conspiracy by the illuminati to control the population.

This thread makes me think of dear Ragnarok.

RIP fella.

We have a built in water dispenser in the fridge, with a charcoal filter connected to the mains water supply

Oh you're clever aren't you?
Can't put up a better explanation as to why fluorine is added to water, which then becomes hydrofluoric acid, an extremely corrosive acid. So instead you try being a sarcastic ****.
But it's fine to add it to water because you're gullible enough to believe it's doing an incredible job at protecting children's dental health.
If you know how to test the pH of your water, anything below 6 is poor for fresh water. I live in one of the areas United Utilities claim is the best. And mine stands at pH4, acidic. Our bodies need pH7 for balance.
PS my daughter is a research student at United Utilities and they have made a few major fuck ups this year to our water supply that they keep to themselves.

Sorry, but wouldn't the ability to filter out the likes of fluoride, particulates, chlorine, other chemicals, microorganisms, synthetic toxins, aluminium or other heavy metals and even some levels of arsenic go some way to actually protect the body's natural salts and minerals ?

Did the plant you worked at use any carbon blockers at any stage?
Didn't have any carbon filters at the plant. Water was filtrated through sand, then microfilter membranes, then RO membranes. The water produced was for industrial use, not drinking water.

Filters may take out certain things but assuming your water utility is maintaining their license, tap water is perfectly fine to drink by itself.

Fluoride occurs naturally in most water supplies, including mineral waters. It is not dangerous in very low concentrations.

Who do you mean by the 'nanny state'? Local authorities have the power to require fluoride to be added to drinking water supplies at source, following local consultation. In the North West of England, this occurs in three places, and the following populations are affected by this: Workington, Seaton, High Harrington, Great Clifton, Silloth, Maryport, Flimby, Cockermouth, Whitehaven, Arlecdon, St Bees, Frizington, Salterbeck, Egremont, Cleator Moor, Beckermet, Ravenglass, Bootle (Cumbria). Then closer to home, Crewe, Alsager and Nantwich.

Where fluoride is added, the concentration will increase to 1mg per litre. Naturally occurring fluoride is typically at 0.2mg per litre. The added doses will not have a great effect on anyone's health other than to improve dental hygiene.

Cool.

Will give it a miss alls the same.

Didn't have tap water at sea so used reverse osmosis and before that we just to use evaporators which supplied the potable water. That was from sea water so once evaporated was pure fresh water. Whomever told you it was bad for you was talking nonsense.

Fair enough. I'll accept that fact considering you're obviously still alive and well enough to post ;)

This is a list of acidic foods
Bacon, Barley malt sweetener, Biscuits, Butter, Bread-white bread, chicken, cheese, eggs, cakes, corn, corn meal, crab, lobster, mushrooms, organic cheese, oatmeal, oats, ocean fish, pasta, pastries, pork, rice, sausages, shrimp, turkey, veal, Alcohol of all kinds, artificial sweeteners, candy, cheese, cocoa, coffee and black tea, cottonseed oil, refined oils, both raw milk and cow's milk that has been homogenized and pasteurized, fried foods of all kinds, game birds, hydrogenated oil, ice cream, jam, jelly, hops, malt, margarine, milk chocolate, msg, processed foods, pudding, refined sugar, white sugar, table salt(NaCl), vinegar of all kinds, yeast, soft drinks, candy, processed foods of all kinds.

I should imagine most people have eat or drunk something on that list and not felt poorly for doing so. So the argument that florine makes water dangerously acidic I think unfounded.

My body doesn't have a tolerance for most of the things in that list, I would therefore feel poorly for indulging.
