The Daily Mail has the same interview with completely different quotes.
Strange as they have the same proprietor.

Is it? Some of us are a tad confused how we could just concede a game we could have and should have won. Some of us dont buy the "excuses" or the need to "rest" players. You might. Some don't.

Could he really make a mistake like this or was he just misquoted?

"We are playing at Chelsea at 12.45 on Saturday and this is dangerous for my players," he said.

"That does not give them enough time to recover from the game in midweek. That is only two days before such an important game and we have to travel to London."

I don't see how that's relevant at all when nobody on here is managing an Italian football club.

Mancini needs to improve his English dramatically as he's still doing any and all media engagements with his translator in tow....

You're missing the point a little, try saying we are playing chelsea on saturday in a comedy Italian accent, and I reckon it would come out something like "we are a playing a chelsea this a saturdaya". however this has been misinterpreted deliberately or otherwise by some who may or may not be nitpicking as "we are playing AT chelsea on saturday". Its all a bit silly really. However on your point regarding RM's English, I quite agree, I think anyone working in a foreign country in any capacity should be able to fluently converse in the native language of that country. I would expect nothing else if I worked in France or Germany.

To be fair mate, I didn't for one moment think that Mancini believed we were playing away on Saturday - agree it was a slip of the tongue or a misquote.

His English is certainly improving...slowly but surely.
