We Are No Longer Champions

If I was the manager id have a giant picture of that twat Terry lifting the trophy on the dressing room wall next season.

And remind them all that if they don't have the bottle for a fight for the title next year then they're welcome to fuck off.
Spot on !

Are they not the champions once they have been awarded the trophy? When do they receive the trophy? In my opinion, once they can't be caught, they are champions. Guard of honour and all that jazz.

That's the issue...

For all intents and purposes (normal situation) they cannot be caught....

However, the competition isn't officially over until all games have been played and the season concluded.
Why does that matter?

Well, there are exceptional circumstances that could theoretically happen that could result in a change of points.

1) A club can be found in breach of the rules in the remaining games and deducted points.
2) Any club that ceases DURING a season will cause all games they played in to be void. So let's say Burnley went bust. Our loss to them would be void, and Chelsea's win would be void. We would lose no points, and Chelsea would lose 6 (assuming they won both matches against them).

Of course, we all know Chelsea deserve their win, and this is a purely academic argument, but according to the PL rules, the season MUST be completed before the title is awarded.

The fact that the PL website uses a match article saying Chelsea have already been crowned is really just a consequence of using using a syndicated report rather than an official crowning.

The media aren't going to wait until the last game, nor should we really expect them to, but still, the season isn't over and so all teams are still technically open to being sanctioned before the end of the season, or just suffering from something like point 2) above.

Like I say, it's a purely academic debate now, it should be getting out of hand between fans.

As ever you completely miss the point. He was right, I am right. You've just fallen for the media declaration and assumed it must be correct like most would assume.

Rule C.11. The Club which is at the top of the table at the end of the Season shall be the League Champions.

Taken from the actual rules, and not the media: <a class="postlink" href="http://m.premierleague.com/content/dam/premierleague/site-content/News/publications/handbooks/premier-league-handbook-2014-15.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://m.premierleague.com/content/dam/ ... 014-15.pdf</a>

So, erm, laugh all the fuck you like, he was right.
So if we win the title with five games to go next season you won't be singing "champions...champions" until after the final whistle of the final game?

*sigh*
Of course I'd be singing it! But we wouldn't TECHNICALLY be champions. Don't know how many times I have to explain it. Chelsea are not TECHNICALLY champions yet. It's a tiny, tiny technicality that nobody really cares about, and the media ignore, but a technicality it remains.
