Are they not the champions once they have been awarded the trophy? When do they receive the trophy? In my opinion, once they can't be caught, they are champions. Guard of honour and all that jazz.
That's the issue...
For all intents and purposes (normal situation) they cannot be caught....
However, the competition isn't officially over until all games have been played and the season concluded.
Why does that matter?
Well, there are exceptional circumstances that could theoretically happen that could result in a change of points.
1) A club can be found in breach of the rules in the remaining games and deducted points.
2) Any club that ceases DURING a season will cause all games they played in to be void. So let's say Burnley went bust. Our loss to them would be void, and Chelsea's win would be void. We would lose no points, and Chelsea would lose 6 (assuming they won both matches against them).
Of course, we all know Chelsea deserve their win, and this is a purely academic argument, but according to the PL rules, the season MUST be completed before the title is awarded.
The fact that the PL website uses a match article saying Chelsea have already been crowned is really just a consequence of using using a syndicated report rather than an official crowning.
The media aren't going to wait until the last game, nor should we really expect them to, but still, the season isn't over and so all teams are still technically open to being sanctioned before the end of the season, or just suffering from something like point 2) above.
Like I say, it's a purely academic debate now, it should be getting out of hand between fans.
