We bought 'em too late

City have had a number of players who were pretty good in their day but by the time we acquired them they were well past their best. If only we could have had the best out of them! Off the top of my head, there are:

Seaman & Beardsley - top England stars.
Peter Reid & McMahon - solid midfielders, internationals.
Tommy Hutchison - brilliantly gifted, wasted his career at Coventry and Blackpool.
George Weah - at his peak, wow! (Not here, though)
Nigel Clough and McManaman were obviously talented, but couldn't be arsed by the time they arrived here.
Another I thought was very good in his day at Oldham was Richard Jobson. When we got him, alas, he was about 90 years old.

Any other ex-greats I've missed?

Fucking Clough..........he's the ONLY City player I hate. What a useless knob - couldn't be bothered and only came as we were a big club. We've had some dross but he really is the worst City player I've seen in my lifetime of watching the club.

Far worse then Steve Daly, Michael Docherty and Barry Silkman even...........

He makes me fucking angry, even now..................C**T !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Paul Bosvelt, Michael Tarnat and Steve McMahon were good players but like many of those already mentioned, their legs had gone by the time they got here.
Tommy Hutchinson and Gerry Gow were veterans when we signed them, but had a huge impact, and I still think they were both moved on too early. Hutch played another eight or nine years after City let him go. He was still better at 40 than much of the dross who tried and failed to replace him in the intervening years.
Jobson is a good shout, was superb for Oldham for many years, right on our own doorstep, yet we waited until age and injuries had blighted him.

Freddy Hill will tug at a few of the older supporters, by the time we got him he could hardly raise much more than a fast walk.

If I remember rightly he scored two and set another one up on his debut for us as he just strolled towards goal leaving a trail of defenders on their arse, a drop of the shoulder and a shuffle of feet was all he ever needed to beat anyone, and he could hold the ball all day with three or four players around him before delivering a pin sharp pass.

He must have been 37-38 when we got him, and retired at the end of the season, yet I still say he was one of the best ball players I ever saw in a City shirt next to "Kinky".

Believe it or not Freddie was only just turned 30 when we signed him, he just moved like a 38 year old! No doubting his technical ability but I never felt he fitted in to City's faster style of attack under Mercer and Allison.
