Last night felt like the start of the season for one reason only IMO
It was the first time in about 10 games that the opposition didn't put 10 men behind the ball and sit blocking passing channels hoping to get one on the break.
There was space for us, therefore options going forward.
Porto played us straight up, and like most teams that try it, got beat.
^^this^^
Porto played like we do at home for the first half last night. They controlled the tempo and the space and were first to everything.
We havent faced that much (if at all) this season. Porto clearly are a very assured, technically excellent team who are used to getting their own way at home.
What pleased me most was how we handled it. Granted they went one up but I didnt feel worried at any stage because we were dealing with them properly and professionally.
I feel Porto felt they 'had to' get the tie won in the first half by going in 2-0 at half time. They know how well we can play and they wanted us putting to bed early as possible.
I felt we were patient, assured and well drilled. Lescott was immense for me, building on several other class displays he's given recently. Yaya and Nige bossed the middle. Stifling and mithering. Balo did a great job as the lone front man.
Big props to the management team for having the whole situation sussed and to the lads for implementing the plan ruthlessly.
To come from behind in europe at a team who hasnt lot at home in any competition for almost 4 years is a seriously impressive achievement.
Concentration and professionalism required now for the 2nd leg at ours.
Well done City :)
