Wedding Songs

The wife and I used Ben Folds - The Luckiest. Granted, this song is used in weddings by people, but I still wouldn't say it's "mainstream" Popular with borderline hip folks in their late 20's and early 30's, but very accessible, and a simply beautiful song. We used it as a first dance and another couple we knew used the instrumental as their walk down the aisle song.

I'd also like to put in a good word for New Order's "Ceremony" as a good song to walk out to once you are married instead of the usual Mendelsohn recessional they always play. We did that and it worked out well.

Some other tracks we used:

My wife walked down the aisle to a track called "Emancipation" by the band Helios instead of the usual "Here comes the bride" business.

We were introduced at our reception and walked in to Smashing Pumpkins "Today"

"Sweet Pea" by Amos Lee is a good father of the bride/bride dance track.

Some others to play at the reception or during dinner:

"Slow Dance" by John Legend
"First Day of My Life" by Bright Eyes
"Such Great Heights" by Iron and Wine (Postal Service cover)

Good luck with everything!

We walked down the aisle to Fleetwood Mac's "Songbird" sung by a female duet, walked back out to Beatles "All You Need Is Love" and 1st dance was Beach Boys "God Only Knows".

None of which are particularly original, but all top songs.

Walking In: Fyfe Dangerfield's cover of Billy Joel's "She's always a woman"
Walking Out: "Bad Things" - by Jace Everett (the theme to Trueblood)
First dances: Rod Stewart "You're In My Heart" and "Mathematics" by Cherry Ghost.

I really wanted "Smack My woman Up" by Prodigy but she was having none of it.

Some cracking suggestions in here folks, and a few that I hadn't heard before which are good - but I'd have concerns that the Mrs hadn't heard of them either which could make things a bit awkward (well, even more awkward than they already are since I can't f***ing dance!!!).

Thanks for yer help, plenty there to listen to again and help make a decision.

Getting married to the Mrs in August, i'm basically taking fuck all part in the organizing of it apart from paying whatever cash she wants for this and that. I've got one job though and it's to pick a few songs - in particular the first dance.

Don't mean to offend anyone, but i'm not into the usual wedding songs you hear i.e. Lonestar, Aerosmith, Snow Patrol, Robbie Williams and all that stuff.

Can anyone recommend anything a bit different but still appropriate for a first dance at a wedding?

I had been thinking along the lines of Oasis - Songbird/Let there be love, Paolo Nutini - I'm loving you, Goo goo dolls - Iris, Elbow - one day like this, Foo fighters - Everlong. While they all sound decent choices i'm still looking for alternatives.

We've not really got any songs which particularly mean anything to us as such, which makes it difficult.

Any suggestions?

It was songbird for me

Walking out of church to Bluemoon for me.

First dance was 'First time ever I saw your face' - Stereophonics version.

Lol!

"Third finger, left hand" by Martha & The Vandellas is appropriately themed.

And "Be my baby" by the Ronettes is just class
