After a few years of basically doing nothing,i've re-joined a gym and decided to start weight training again.

I'm not looking to bulk up,just looking to increase my size a little and 'cut up'.

What would be the best way to go about this?
Should I concentrate on certain muscle groups(arms and chest monday, back and shoulders wednesday, legs and abs fridays) or should i do an all over workout 3 days a week to begin with and then work the muscle groups individually?

I find that as long as i am still able to raise a full pint to my mouth i dont need to train.

Hope this helps.

Yes mate, the best thing is do a day on two disciplines(ie chest and arms), then rotate as you see fit. Ive only been back to the gym for the past 12 mnth and like you, don't wanna be some sort of Arnold but just to trim up a bit. I get advice from the lads in the gym all the while but i will say that i'd do some bag work and cardio as well, and if one day you don't fancy it one night then just get down there and push out half an hour, its all good.

Also, i go to Tesco/Asda around about 7/8pm and bag up on the whoops/reduced fruit, with all the fruit that you score you can have a smoothie everyday with a touch of water/milk(as you get the natural juice from the fruits) and you can bang a spoonful or two of protien powder in with it, i have just changed to 90+protein powder, Vanilla flavour for me btw but they do all kinds, each to their own, mate.

I know fuk all about the gym game but i hope i've give you a bit of a heads up.
You'll feel ten times better and feel as though you have earned a pint on a weekend.

work with light enough weights.... they ll keep you lean.
if you use heavy weights you bulk up....over time it turns back to fat!!!! don t forget this! ;) just keep it simple and work off the excess fats....stomach crunches should only be done to 80* angle for max fat burn.other than that i d use a bike....get out more too!

This is the biggest misconception ever! It is genetically and biologically impossible for muscle to turn into fat. It is like saying your eyeballs will turn into teeth. They are two entirely different types of organ (in the biological sense of the word) they are made up of completely different types of cells and muscle can NEVER CHANGE INTO FAT. Your muscle can shrink or waste over time if you don't maintain your training and you can put fat on from eating too much/ doing too little but it will never turn into fat.

Good advice, sounds very like a routine I used to do with my boyfriend a while back -should see you all buffed up in no time if you are careful about what you swallow.

I've just finished the 10th gym session of my life. Biggest mistake i make is push it too hard at the start, that way it hurts like hell for the rest of the week and i never get into a routine and basiicaly end up going twice then stopping. Take it easy at the start, build it up gradually.

Thinking of starting back myself. If you want to bulk up I found eating slow release energy foods that have carbs and protein a couple of hours before you go. Pasta, Chicken, rice etc.

I used to do a 3 day routine, which would give my muscles time to recover from the first day ie. Day 1 Chest & Back, day 2 Arms & shoulders, day 3 Stomach & legs.

Increase weights and make fewer reps is also good to build you up. 3 sets of 1 muscle workout is enough. Set 1: 10 reps. set 2: 8 reps set 3: 6 reps.

Drink loads of water also. after your workout, stretch off and finally eating a banana is supposed to help you get any toxins out of your muscles.

Forgot to mention about breathing. Breathe in through the nose when you take up the weight and out through the mouth when you release the weight.

"like saying your. Eyeballs will turn into teeth" lmao! Made me laugh!
You need to speed up your metabolism is you wanna slim down or lose a bit of fat. Try eating 6 7 small meals a day, change your carbs into good carbs like brown rice instead of white, and dont eat them after six. Also do some interval training on the treadmill, I do a 5 min warm up then 1 min on 4 mph 2 min on 7mph then one sprinting on 9mph, I repeat it like 5 times burns some fat that! Then I focus one day on one group of muscles, mon- rest Tue- chest. And abs wed- bicep thurs- back shoulders abs Fri/sat - rest sun- tricep.

That's my basic advice :)
