Wembley 1981 memory's

thirty years and still cant understand how we didnt win, spurs were jammy then and still are, funny my lasting memory is steve mckenzie's fanastic goal, in the top ten of goals at wembley imo, and the constant media talk of the two argentinians ricky villa and ozzie ardiles, roll forward thirty years and lets hope our two argentinians can inspire not one but two memorable wembley wins...

All I remember about the replay was the amount of trouble. I can still see those spurs fans in our end coming down the steps at the same time we were all milling about.

Still hurts that we didnt win the first game- if tueart had been sub I think we may have won it.

That's a good point. When the final went to extra time - first to do so for a decade, wasn't it? - we were clearly physically stronger than them. But though we had all the play, we couldn't quite finish them off. Tueart coming off the bench rather than Tony Henry may have given us the attacking thrust we needed.

went down on the train for the first match, hired a mini bus for the replay still got my ticket stub for the saturday it cost 3.50

Dyed great point Tueart on the bench at the first game could have made all the difference........

I went to all the cup games that year. If I remember correctly, we stuffed Palace and Norwich at home (was it 4-0 and 6-0?) and then beat Peterborough away 1-0.

The quarter final at Goodison was an epic. I was in the paddock, where the players' tunnel is, and I've never been in such a packed terrace in my life (and I remember the Kippax well for some games). We got a draw and then beat them in the replay at Maine Road 3-1.

I was high up in the Holte End at Villa Park, right behind Paul Power's free-kick which got us into the final. About 75% of the spectators that day were City fans. I remember, as someone else pointed out, getting back to Birmingham New Street station and coming across plenty of rags who were returning from Coventry. Quite a bit of fun with them (as well as a few scuffles!).

We could have and should have beaten the Spuds on the Saturday. That lucky deflected free-kick of Hoddle's, off Tommy Hutch's backside when there were only about 10 minutes left, was completely unfair.

At the time, I was living and working in that there London, so I had to make a trip up to Manchester on the Monday with my ticket-stubs (for me and my brother) from the first game, to get tickets for the replay. It was obvious on the Thursday, as soon as we got to Wembley, that there were twice as many yids there. They were everywhere, and I remember it kicking off big-time in one of the bottom sections after they scored their first goal.

Stuff Ricky Villa and his 'wonder' goal. Stevie Mac's effort was one of the best volleys I have ever seen. Again, we could have beaten them, but it wasn't to be.

Happy Days! (apart from the replay result).
