Were you wrong about Pep?

We're luck to have him but he's lucky to have us too, not many clubs would give him the freedom and utter belief in his methods that City have given him.
It's a great double act and a match made in heaven, long may it continue.

How much competition has he had in recent decades? You’d have to be long term to remember Allison and Mercer.

Malcolm was a brilliant coach but without Joe Mercer, he couldn't really deliver the results. They were a very fine managerial team but, regardless of what he does or does not win at City, Pep is a level above.

Oh, and Pep was not naive last season.

Partially. I thought he was a footballing genius before he came. I enjoyed our football (mostly) last season and wasn't particularly upset that we didn't win anything. I think some overestimated the strength of the squad he inherited from Manuel. Where I was wrong, was that i thought he would take longer to get us to the standard we are seeing this season. Its scary to think where we may be this time next season with another couple of windows under the belt.

I still think one of the biggest risks is that his intensity burns out some of the squad. That will define how long he stays - once he believes he has nothing left to teach them he will go. Hopefully we will get at least couple more years on top of the original 3.

I thought he was the best in the world by some margin before he came and nothing since his arrival has changed that view.

I disagree. Some of his team selections and tactics weren’t right. He was revolution over evolution. I found it underwhelming and gave up my FA Cup Semi Final ticket as I had no motivation to attend.

Thought he was a footballing legend before he arrived and thought we were unlucky not to win silverware last year. The guy is arguably the greatest of all time.

If Pep had changed his tactics last season it would have shown the players he lacked belief, then this season wouldn’t have happened.

Absolutely. There's also the fact that 8 or 9 of the players who've made up the starting 11 this year had proper exposure to his system last year. Why should he adapt his system to save a couple of old, average players and sacrifice the rest?

Never doubted him myself.
It was clear from the outset that he had inherited an ageing squad that needed major surgery and that his ideas and systems would take time to get through to the players.
Having read his books he implements his patterns through rigorous practice and discipline and this all takes time.
I am surprised we are achieving what we are this season but fully expected him to deliver the goods eventually.
Quite simply the best club coach in the world.
