West Brom - Pulis sacked (page 4)

Over rated manager. People say he has never been relegated but when he was sacked by Stoke, they had the third biggest biggest net spend in 5 years, only behind us and Chelsea and he never managed a top half finish

Good, couldn't happen to a nicer man, no doubt it was because we spent all that money but refused to give him 30m for a bang average centre half, fuck you Pulis you footballing dinosaur.

It's a bit harsh to call Pulis a failure imo. He's good at keeping clubs up but that's his limit. There's a group of managers who excel at either getting clubs into the PL or keeping them there. Bruce, Warnock, Holloway will get you into the top flight while Pulis & Allardyce will keep you there. They're never going to finish in the top 6 but they're good enough to do a specific job. They guy who owns 3 mini-markets may run those stores very well but he probably ain't going to be able to run Tesco.

The problems start when owners want more than just survival. Once those first three named above have got you into the PL then you should sack them because they're unlikely to be able to keep you there.

I always remember Charlton sacking Curbishley because they thought they should be better than they were and look where they are now.

The other problem is the PL and the money available to even very mediocre teams. Teams should be given an incentive to finish as high as possible not to merely survive. At the moment the PL is paying out about £2. 5bn in prize money but only £2.5m extra per place finished. Make that £25m per place and teams might be encouraged to play football.

That's why I think Mark Hughes has done reasonably well at Stoke. Under Pulis they were consistently never really in trouble, finishing lower mid table, but had a squad to fit that style and that style only. Hughes has a net spend of around £10m per season (not much in comparison to many teams), has got them playing at least some football, and has improved their average league position to top half. We saw how Palace struggled when appointing De Boer to improve the football that the side were playing (on a considerably higher budget).

Swansea will sack Clement and Pulis will rock up at Swansea.
No, you can see what is happening at Swansea by them making Leon Brittan assistant manager. He will be manager by this time next week. It's a ploy by the owners who have seen the fans turn on them. They know that the fans would never boo Leon Brittan because they think the sun shines. Pulis will probably walk into the Wales job

It's time these clubs started thinking outside the box with their managerial appointments, same old managers getting jobs, giving clubs brief spikes before eventually getting the sack.

Look at Sunderland, last/this season have shown that some of these clubs will drop like a brick if/when they do go down.

I remember a good point someone made on Sunday Supplement, that while there's this perception foreign managers are preventing young upcoming British coaches from landing good jobs, the problem really is the old, British managers and the merry go round culture are actually the biggest obstacle by far.

I’ve just seen this on Liveleek.

In the debate on whether he was a success or failure he was a success for all the clubs owners by keeping the the premier league gravy train rolling, but a unprecedented failure for all fans of teams he’s managed with the turgid football he served up, fans want to see good football not good a bank balance
