Spending the money we did on Mangala, then the emergence of Denayer, is giving somebody a headache.

Throw in your club captain, and the most consistent defender we had last year, and it becomes an even bigger headache.

For me you play your best players. That is Denayer and Demichelis imo

Kompany's form problems, along with the whole idea that we have defensive problems, are massively overstated in my opinion. People are talking about us like we're a Newcastle or even a Liverpool from a few years back but we're still extremely solid defensively and only look bad in comparison to our ultra conservative/defensive style which we played under Mancini.

Here's a great one to ask people who go on about it - Joe Hart has won 5 PL Golden Gloves now, more than any other keeper in history. Now the excuse used to be that anybody would win that with the defence he has in front of him. So either Hart is average with a world class defence or Hart is world class with an average defence - can't have it both ways.

Im not convinced by Bony at all yet, but I expect him to play. With Sergio on the bench.

Yet we conceded more goals than Utd last season.

I think the point is we have four top class central defenders. If we are picking players on merit all four should have an equal chance of playing depending upon their form. Martin has been at Copa America, hasn't featured in pre season and is therefore unlikely to start. Denayer has looked good pre season, better than Kompany who has had the distraction of the new baby as a mitigating factor. If we are going to play our youngsters there shouldn't be any sacred cows. It doesn't mean Kompany is shit, it just means we're giving everyone an even break. Kompany needs to prove he still deserves the shirt. I think he will prove that over the course of the season but it's not his of right.

You do realise one is an out and out winger the other is a striker?

In other news I'd rather see Joe Hart start over Mangala.

I'm of the assumption that neither Bony or Aguero will be starting tonight therefore Sterling starts up top and Navas slots out wide. However, I wish for Iheanacho up top, Sterling out wide and Navas benched :)

And yet finished second. Goals against is not the only measure of a defence when comparing completely different teams. We play a much more open and attacking style which obviously leaves us prone to higher risk of long balls or pacey players beating us on the counter.

Agreed.

People making an issue out of something that doesn't exist.

My only argument is we need to find a settled back four where we can.
