Cheers Tony.spoke to my WHU mate tonight..he reminded me it would have been Johns 60 th birthday this weekend. Its poignant that ,as an ex military man,John collapsed on the day before Remembrance Sunday.....I will probably be going to the game...the plan is to travel early and have a visit to the area around the old ground, and have a pint in The Boleyn pub...a place i know only too well.Funny how life turns a trick..and its Manchester City, who i know John had a soft spot for ..who are his teams next oppenents...he had connections with City old boys...John hated modern football, and was as disturbed as i was at the change of ground of his beloved club.It seems only right that we should spend some time at the real Hammers home...in memory of a man who simply loved Football.the game, not the business .Giz a bell if you fancy meeting up on the day mate..

Going down early for the game..Hope Phil Foden gets a start......nearest Westham player over the years to compare is...Alan Devonshire
Older footy fans.......compare and contrast Foden and Devonshire ..;)

Not a bad comparison Dennis. He was a legend. Met him recently at Maidenhead where he's manager and doing pretty well

Hope you enjoyed your trip down in memory of John

Yes mate.had a very good trip..breakfast in a cafe on Green street,a few pints in a Working Mens club just up from The Boleyn (while we waited for pub to open!) Met Mark Ward in there and had a good chat about his days with us under Howard Kendall,in partc our 2-1 away win at Villa park in 1990..when Villa were top,and we were bottom..we hadnt won away in the top division for years....Ward scored our first goal..he was only too pleased to remind me...one of my best ever City games that...
Had a few in The Boleyn and a crawl around a few other places, inc Frank Lampard seniors old pub....and had a stop off at The Memorial Gardens just up from the old ground Main stand.....before making our way over too the match...in all about ten of us,9 hammers ,1 Blue..we had a great day to be honest, despite the sad circumstances. It was nice to see WHU put the news of Johns passing in the club programme yesterday...with a picture courtesy of my mate Mark.....Sat in block 242 for the game..showed appropriate respect despite the score...A good day had by all, regardless of how the result went...

Nice one mate. Glad you had a good trip.

We were in the Vic before the game and we drank a toast to John. King Edward after. He was a well loved fella.

Take care mate. I'm going up for the return fixture. Let me know where you are and I'll gladly buy you a pint. MLH
