The problem there is that the CCB in Pep's system plays as DM in attack (and is actually meant to be the weakest defensively), which means they need to be very comfortable on the ball, have decent passing range, and be fairly mobile. The LCB and RCB are intended to be the defending specialists. So if you move Kompany into the center you lose those gifts, which are currently superior to Stones. Also, putting Kompany in that role, given his recent injury troubles, is just asking for a long term absence.
All of that said about the system, I don't think Vinny will be caught out much in that role as the back five becomes more accustom to it.
No, with 3ATB CCB tends to play deeper than LCB and RCB to create more passing options, forming a rectangular shape with RCB, LCB and DM while playing from the back. RCB and LCB act like 'pivots', not just defending specialists. Pep uses Cruyff's approach to 3 ATB, its purpose is creating more passing options, not defending by numbers.
All players should be comfortable on the ball, put Mangala in any of those positions, and it stops to make any sense.
