I've just been playing a couple of songs by "Just Juliet" for my Daughter.

The Track above by Bob Marley and sung by Johnny C and Joe Strummer is what you need to aspire to Young Bob.

I've been listening to Howler's debut album today. My thoughts:

If “America Give Up” is your first experience of Howler, you’d probably be heading down the right tracks if you thought of them as a sort of male-fronted version of Best Coast with a bit of a punky attitude. There’s a combination of distorted guitars, the “let’s play this one safe, guys” accessible surf-pop sound and pretty punchy vocals that seem to land halfway between John Lydon and The Jesus and Mary Chain, and there’s also excitable flashes of rock ‘n’ roll-slash-pop punk drumming thrown in on tracks like “This One’s Different” and “Beach Sluts”.

Howler won't get marks for originality due to their pretty cliché lyrics about “not wanting you, but needing you” and wanting their “hearts to be broken”, being pulled together with a sound that was perfected and regurgitated numerous times over the past four or five decades, but it shows a bit of potential and if Howler can find themselves, rather than take their ideas from (and then claim to be “inspired” by) others, they may be able to improve on what is actually a decent foundation for a pretty lengthy career in the music scene: “America Give Up” is pretty accessible and “cool” enough to be popular with indie kids, and it might even turn a few older heads in their direction, but it’s not going to be popular with someone searching for something interesting and new.

There’s nothing particularly wrong with this album because it’s a pretty easy listen - and if you’re looking for something for camper van holidays in the summer, you’re in the right place - but if you’re looking for something to challenge you, I’d suggest you look elsewhere because this album doesn’t have anything ground-breaking or game-changing about it. Maybe if you came back another day, three or four albums into Howler’s career, you might find something really worth treasuring. But for the large part, this is quite forgettable. Some of the riffs and hooks are catchy, and some of the distorted guitars added a dimension to the songs that I got quite caught up in, but it’s not going to change anyone’s life exactly.
