W.C. Handy Born 1873 long forgotten by most including me, who think nothing evolved between Strauss and the Beatles but America developed the blues first thanks to Handy and his orchestra.

W C Handy of course will have come to prominence as the distribution of recorded music started and early radio - the genesis of where we are today but I bet he rode the coat tails of others who went before who performed in bars that few ever heard

Handy is credited with the birth of the blues but like you say out of the bars maybe in the Deep South of America.
I think it’s in all of us from the first time we listen to any soul music it stays with us
