Great pick that. Saw them quite a few times in that era and they always blew me away. McCabe is a mighty guitarist. Remember a gig in small room at the Uni on Oxford Road when Ashcroft thought he could fly. Unfortunately the ceiling was that low he almost banged his head every time he jumped up. A Northern Soul is a great record imo but they do get some shit nowadays
Yeah, I think the Verve should have lived their career back to front. By that I mean, to me, if you listen to Urban Hymns followed by A Northern Soul and the A Storm In Heaven (remastered version) - the original sounds like it was recorded in a bucket! - it sounds like a band growing in confidence from a commercially focused band to confident psychedelic rock outfit. I guess the drugs do work ;-)
