Can you back that up at all?
"there will be more children diagnosed with autism this year then diabetes, cancer etc put together"
Can you back that up at all?
I don't think it's becoming more common, I think it's just more recognised now. A kid growing up in the 80's would have just been labelled as a bit quiet, not very sociable whereas now that same kid will be diagnosed as on the spectrum.
Same reason you didn't see any metatarsal injuries in football in the 70's, it was just called a broken toe.
So basically, we all have autism in some form.
I think everyone is on the spectrum in some form.
Although I'm always wary of people self diagnosing themselves with certain conditions.
I know as a kid I used to like to line up my toy cars, wasn't very sociable and have always been good with numbers and logical things.
These are all things that, recently I've seen as examples of signs of autism, but wouldn't really like to self diagnose myself as autistic.

That's just a small part of a very complicated triage of situations. To be considered autistic you must have issues with communication, socialisation and certain repetitive behaviours consistently and over a long enough period of time. All kids have issues with all of these at one point or another to one degree or another but to have a diagnosis of autism you need to have problems with all three parts.
