What do Southerners really think of Northerners?

In my 25 years of living in Kent, working in London and having a West Ham season ticket... i cant recall any 'slagging' off for people up north.

Ive been to Manchester, Newcastle and Nottingham on nights out, some accents stand out but still all the same vibe

I live in a terraced house
I have a flat cap
I love a fry up (done in lard)
I have six fingers on my left hand
I dont eat salad or brown bread
I say what i think and not just what people want to hear
I have never drunk a Shandy, no point watering down a good pint
I don't say barth,it's bath or darn, its down
Long live the north, you namby pamby shandy swilling soft southern girlies
And i love Leeds United

As a northern born, southern raised man:

I don't get anything off people from where I like (Milton Keynes) because I guess they're jealous that I have a reason to support a team with the word Manchester in the title.

However, I still get thick, ignorant shite said to me on a weekly basis whilst watching City.

"I suppose going to Spurs away is easy for you Liam"

Yeah dead simple. About as easy as a "proper" Manc going to Doncaster. Just round the fucking corner, eh?!

As much as you'd think southerners think this and that, a lot of people I've met seem to have this idea that the south IS London. And apparently London is a shithole. Which it isn't. London is fucking brilliant.

Worked in London for five years in the nineties, most people were sound to your face, but I'm a big lad and lippy.
Over here in Australia, the ex pat football team I played for had a mixture of northeners, jocks, southeners, cockney's and Irish. We all got on apart from the cockney's,with a couple of exceptions. They seemed stand offish, cliquey and had an air of superiority, but a lad from Leeds said that about the Mancs.
The cockney lads who were alright, were sound and said they prefered the craic of the northerners ,jocks and Irish,to other cockney's.
It just who you come across that forms these opinions.

As a Midlander I am literally stuck in the middle. My opinion.... Southerners have a misplaced superiority complex, Northerners have a chip on both shoulders ;-)

I get that ALL the time. Used to meet my Manc based Mates in the Pub before the match and mention I was off to Arsenal, Tottenham etc. and just get a dry response similar to the ones you get. Both were televised! Not one of my Mates regularly went to Bolton or Blackburn with City. By their logic, I'd give them the same dig for every home match they go to. I don't.

Personally, I find Southerners have many misconceptions about the North which feature a supposed lack of education or class. Very few have ever been there. I'm more educated and intelligent than almost every Cockney in my local. Several grown men in there can't read and write properly. I came to London to further my career. Nothing else.

One thing I will say is that nearly every new Blue I've met will check I'm from Manchester almost immediately. One Bloke asked me twice. I'm not quite sure how comfortable I'd be had I responded speaking like Frank Butcher.

And the Midlands is just desperate to be relevant in any way, shape or form ;-P

We're just well balanced :-) Get the best of both lots.

If that was the case, why does the Midlands accent sound like someone's having a stroke?

:)

I was working in an office in Guildford recently, when they clocked my accent someone asked me blue or red? I said Blue obviously, I'm a Manc. They all laughed and pointed one guy who it turns out was a rag, from erm Guildford.

I didn't really take the piss I just asked him one question, in front of everyone. Why? I asked, Why would you choose to support that lot?

I've always supported them mate, so I'm not a glory hunter or anything. I've supported them '68 when they won the European cup! The whole office were pissing themselves and this guy just didn't see the irony of what he'd just said.

As for southerners, they generally feel superior to northerners, but the way I see it is let them think it's great down there, it'll stop the tossers from moving up here. Also, I've been working in London a fair bit recently and my God that is one great big shit hole.

Going to Birmingham is like going back in time

You can probably narrow it down more to Londoners who are the real arrogant arseholes.
I know people from Kent, Portsmouth, Gloucs, etc and they all hate Londoners for their superior attitude.

It depends where in London you go. The parts of South London and East London I've been to are really down to earth.

Fully admit to overplaying the Manc Scally when confronted with snobbery. They drop their load.
