I am a genealogist - I trace and write family histories.
Seriously that sounds a fascinating job :)
What's the furthest back you have been able to trace ?

The Norman conquest, not so difficult with landed families.
Yeah when you look from that angle it should be a little easier.
What about your average Mr Smiths etc ? Any real hidden family surprises that you have uncovered going back many generations ? The reason I ask is my Nanna RIP got back to about 1780 and then it came to a stop.

That's good, there's a lot of ifs and maybe's. If it's a common name it can be more difficult, if the family is living in a small community for generations it's easier. If the vicar maintained his records well that's good, some are poor some are lost. You have then to refer to other types of records such as wills etc. Some families you can wizz 10 generations or more, others you struggle with 3.

I would be disappointed with cicil registration records if I couldn't make the early 1800s as a minimum.

The internet has made a massive difference but subscriptions to access records are expensive especially at professional level.
