Facts are rarely as cut and dried as you may think so you can have an opinion in contradiction to a fact. You may be be wrong as a result but you can hold that opinion

Only with the benefit of hindsight- at the time they were accepted as facts until until they were challenged by people who held different opinions.They were opinions that didn’t have proof yet, not facts.
"Facts" change as knowledge increases so there will be facts today that will be proved wrong in the future
