Did a secondment in South Africa many years back and we got very close to various animals albeit whilst being inside a car; pretty sure we stopped very close to some baboons down at the Cape.
Also, we parked in a car park at the Cape and were in the gift shop / visitor centre or some such when a troop of baboons came into the car park and headed for the back of a school bus that was waiting there whilst its passengers were off exploring. The baboons went in through a rear window and proceeded to ransack the bus whilst the bus driver made a hasty exit out of the front door. It was a comical sight but scary too. The troop’s leader was one evil mutha.

Not a baboon but a few years ago we had a troupe of howler monkeys hanging around in the resort we were in.
One day the big male climbed up onto our balcony.
The wife went out on the balcony with her camera.
The big fucker (the monkey) let out a blood curdling howl and bated its massive fangs.
Needless to say, the wife just about shit her pants.
