It's a microphone for picking up sound better from the players on the field. When they use it you can hear what the players are saying as if you're standing beside them.

I really don't think it made any difference to the sound quality during the game.

Are you sure you were watching the broadcast using it? It's probable there were several broadcasts as Telefutura carried it as well as ESPN UK and probably local stations, too.

In fact it all makes sense now. The reason we have alien mascots with a friendly demeanor is to lull us into a false sense of security. Its only a matter of time before we see their true hatred of mankind. The more you look into their eyes the more you see the hatred.

And not all of us in the States get it either so we ended up watching streams. :D
