This is my first OP. We've had some fun with the worst car, most of which were BMC/Leyland/Rover, but there were some good cars around back in the day. Plenty of Fords stood up well and Tuearts Right Boot alluded to a BMC one on Page 12 of the worst car thread. I am of course going for the Iconic Jaguar E-Type, which stunned the motoring world when it was unveiled at The Geneva motor show in 1961. It's looks, performance and price blew them away. Enzo Ferrari called it the most beautiful car he had ever seen. You do not have to choose pricey cars, just ones that were tops in their class.

Without doubt

50 years on and so believeably adaptable.
Nothing comes close

For the sound the Jaguar XJR-9.

Generally in my eyes the McLaren F1.

And maybe a more sensible option the good old Mini.

I'd plump for the E-Type Jag too - as the Mafia guy at the start of the Italian Job said "prrrrritteee carrr"

The Land Rover Series 2 would be my other pick - introduced in 1958 and basically unchanged in shape or form (bar headlamps moving) right up to today's 2015 swansong Defender 90 and 110 - a run of 57 years in production. (plus 10 previous for the Series 1 but that's quite difference to my mind)

How do you define best?

Fastest?

Most luxurious?

Best selling?

Anyhow, I'll go for the convertible Mk 1 or 2 Jaguar "E" Type.

Even Enzo Ferrari said the "E" was the worlds most beautiful car.

They cost around £5k when they stopped making them in 1975. (Mk 3)

Mint examples are changing hands for around £150,000+ now.

One of the best looking yes, but best car not a chance, wasn't as fast as they said, not too good at cornering and brakes made out of bottle tops, the db9 or vanquish much better and better looking...

Simply the best in their class at the time. Could be Cortinas, Escorts, Rollers, Astons. Price don't matter. I still go with the jag.
Maybe cars you have owned that you thought were the best at the time.
