What would you change about the rules of football?

If a player wants to prove they're not interfering when in an offside position then they have to have both hands above their head at the point the pass is made and keep them there until they're back in an onside position or the ball goes dead - otherwise they're offside.

I’d like to see the fouled player (or last to touch in case of handball) be the one to take the penalty.
If fouled player is injured or there is any other reason he can’t take or doubt it would fall to the keeper. I hate to see forwards goal records that contain zillions of goals that belong to teammates.

What would I change,oh I know how about every league every cup competition, including those run by UEFA and FIFA having the same set of rules and laws, maybe then we’d start getting somewhere..

This . Offside in the penalty area is always interfering with play . I honestly think these grey areas have been brought in in order to create discussion points and debates for television . It keeps eyes on the page etc etc . Seems to be working .... the endless coverage whips up the storm , clubs appealing decisions and the referees loose confidence and competence .
Sepp Blatter literally said this when he was arguing against technology in the game years ago. He knew that controversy is what keeps them in the headlines.

Personally I'd scrap stoppage time. Clock stops when the ball goes out of play. Half ends once the game stops for a non-foul reason after the 45 mins is up.

Also, offside gets defined clearly as if the attacking team has a player in an offside position, it's offside regardless of whether they're involved.

This isn't a "rule" of association football, but pretty standard- I would make it so that a 0-0 draw results in reduction of a point from each team. That would encourage attacking from both sides in that instance.

It would be suspiciously one each within the first few minutes every week at every ground.

Goal keeper is not allowed out of the box. How many times do you see an attack fail because the keepers acting like a sweeper. Make for more goals.
More goals doesn't necessarily mean more exciting, any more than everybody shooting 65s on friendly resort courses makes golf more exciting.

I’d bring in a rule whereby the main bbc article every day isn’t a different one about changing the rules of football just because the dippers feel hard done by in their latest game. They’re at it again today with the lead story being that Tony fucking pullis would rein var in for the fans. Not sure why this thread was then needed to replicate the same feelings either tbh

¹) (League games only) when a player is sent off - during the first half of the season - he should be ineligible to play in the return match. Why should a random team not involved in the game benefit from not having to face this player? If he leaves in January transfer window, the other team can select a player in his place to miss the match. Token 85th minute red cards after allowing a player to kick Erling all game would then be a genuine punishment.

²) Any red card, anywhere on the pitch - penalty. Same for 'professional' or 'taking one for the team' fouls.

³) As in rugby - dissent punished by moving the ball 10 yards closer to goal. If that means inside the area, then it's a penalty. Edit: this should be an option for the attacking team.

⁴) Shirt-pulling is a foul - punish it. At corners, convert to either a penalty or goal-kick, depending upon who fouled.

⁵) VAR line calls - if they cannot decide within 15 seconds of staring at a line on a screen, then ALWAYS either rule in favour of defence or attack and get on with it!

⁶) 2 x 30 minute halves. Clock stops at every break in play; graphic on screen if longer than, say, 10 seconds; restarts when ball is kicked/thrown.

Other than those, wouldn't change a thing! :-)

We tried the 10 yard rule and teams used it to make the attacking team get to the edge of the box as it's harder to get the ball 'up and down' from there.

I'd go back to what it was 40 years ago. There is not one rule change that has made the game better.
Watch a full 90-minute game from 40 odd years ago… you’ll realise how shit football was back then. Mostly with the quality of football, but also with the differences in these aspects of the game:

Teams going a goal up in a game constantly passing it back to their keeper who picked it up and took ages out of the game.
Teams on the attack penalised because a player was in an offside position but not even interfering with play given offside.
Teams who score off some great play but the officials disallow it for offside when it wasn’t even offside.
Defences who catch a player offside but the officials don’t spot it and they go on to score a goal that stands.
Shots just go over the line for a goal not spotted by the officials and not given as a goal.
Shots that don’t go over the line given as goals.
Play your heart out to beat a team but only getting 2 points for the win.

Football is better on all those fronts now.

Should be allowed to dribble from free-kicks and corners.

Speed the game up, less launching the ball, encourages a player to get up and look for a quick advantage rather than roll around pretending to be injured.
