When does The Wire get good?

I think part of the problem is that TV for me has been ruined by 24. No TV programme has come close to the same kind of drama - I was totally addicted to it, 4-5 episodes a night, and EVERYTHING else seems slow and boring in comparison.

Hoping the Wire will get better soon

I've not seen 24 but I tried watching The Wire after evryone raved about it and I wondered what all the hype was about and gave up watching it.

The Wire is fucking excellent.

Season 2 is shit though. It goes all 'white' and drastically loses its way.

Prison Break is excellent for the first season and goes shitter and shitter by the season. The final season is embarasingly wank.

The Wire is a slow burner you have to invest the time in the characters and the fact you don't know who will last from one episode to the next made it for me, it was unpredictable and not formulaic like many TV shows. I finished watching The Sopranos for the first time last year and although it was good it want as good as people made out and I thought the ending was pants. If you want something different and brutal try Oz a prison drama some uncomfortable viewing but very good and lots of the cast of the Wire are in it, indeed it seems to have many future TV stars in it.

People always say The Wire is a slow-burner. I'm not sure that's true. Although the first episode or 2 are about establishing characters, after that the pace doesn't really change much for the rest of the first season. It's not as if there's some amazing twist after 10 episodes that changes everything. As others have said, it's just a case of getting to know characters and their world in more detail and seeing how things pan out for them. If you're not into it after 5 or 6 episodes, you probably never will be as, although I think it's fantastic, it's a pretty acquired taste and it does require a fair bit of investment.

I can't remember how far along it is but, for me, one of the best episodes of the first season was when

Keema got shot

If you've passed that point and you still think it's shit, you might as well bin it off as that's probably as good as it's going to get for you until season 3/4.

Have watched The Wire right through twice and it was only the second time that I really appreciated S2.

The plight of the families whose way of life is torn apart by "progress" and economy and the shit they get into trying to hold onto their relevence is quite sad. It could just as easily be any of us.

I originally saw the docks thread as an intrusion to the street/cops core of the show but as we know there is a similar diversion in S3-5 also.

Honestly , I would watch season 3 first. My wife wasn't into the 1st season either so i skipped to 3 and she was able to go back and get through the 1st 2 after it. 4th season is not as good as 3 and 5th has its high points but I hated one of the main storylines. At the time I thought the most unbelievable part with Omar ruined it but read not long ago it was actually something the guy based on Omar did so it sorta saved the season for me.

3,4,1,2,5 is how I have the seasons ranked
How can you look at a tele programme like this? They are all the same programme, the series aren't in competition with each other.

I was the same with mad men, Two episodes in and I lost interest. I started blue bloods last night, I have to say it looks excellent. Full first series on sky on demand
