When should Swales have left?

Thanks everyone for all the insights into the Swales Era. As a younger fan, Swales has just been a figure on the periphery that I hadn't known a lot of the ins and outs regarding - but thanks to many of the very detailed posts, especially Petrusha and Gary, it has given me a real knowledge on the issue. Like it was mentioned earlier in the thread, these are the things that we need to keep alive, for the current generation, my younger one and the future ones to come.

'Box office to broke' is how someone recently described Swales tenure to me. Quite accurate I reckon. Didn't he exclaim in his first program notes he wanted to eradicate 'show business City' and make us more ruthless like Revies Leeds?

If he said that (i don't know) it's quite ironic that other chairman were very supportive of Swales being at City because they knew Swales would always manage to fuck up and stop City fullfilling any potential they had (my old mans mate knew a few of Scumptons board back then). In fairness when anyone slagged City when we were shit my old man used to tell them to be thankful for Swales or City COULD have had the success of the dippers and more recently Utd if we had had a half decent chairman running us.

I'm always amused by the 'Swales was a City fan' argument. So were most of the people on the old 76 bus. It didn't make them fit to run a major football club.

The problem with Swales was that he grossly over-estimated his own ability. This is always fatal. He ended up coming close to destroying Manchester City.

Maybe though if we weren't the basket case we turned into we wouldn't have been in the position were we had to turn to Shiniwatra and wouldn't have been sold to the sheik, and today been more of an Everton or Villa than what we have now. So Swales maybe went just at the right time.
