Where does this confidence come from?

Liverpool were average last year and, despite a rallying period towards the end of the season, finished well off the pace. I'll be the first to admit they've made some good signings - Suarez will score goals this year and Downing is, for my money, still criminally underrated - but surely talk of title contention is grossly optimistic.

Maybe it's growing up a City fan, stumbling from disappointment to disappointment, but I just don't understand this confidence. I have to give myself a pep talk to admit that we're more than likely to finish top four again...

Well if you look at the last half a season ie 19 league games then united have 41 PTA, chelsea 40 pts Liverpool 39 pts and city 38 pts. So the form is not a couple of games it is prolonged an they beat united Chelsea and city on that time. So whilst I think they will come 4 th the stats show that they are no more deluded than we are and that they are entitled to believe they are in a 4 way race for the title.

Stats do not back up our arrogance anymore than theirs and as long as you get as many points for a battling 1 0 win as a silky 4 0 win then they have a chance.

For the record I think we will win the league and they will come 4 th !

Those stats are fine, except that they don't take into account the changes/additions to the teams during the closed season.

No stats can show the difference Aguaro and Nasri will make, and that Dzeko is on fire!

Football statistics are often viewed as though they have not originated within the game! Football can throw up anything within a 90min game (99mins if yer at The Swamp). I have often railed at the three points scruddy teams have nicked via a lacklustre, ref-led, own goal, one-nil when our beloved MCFC play staggering football, shoot 'emselves in the foot and end up hanging on for twenty mins!

Don't know who's doing your stats for you but over the last nineteen games we picked up thirty-six points versus their thirty-three points but they played four of the rest of the top seven at home and only two away. By contrast we played five of the rest of the top seven away and only one at home. So we had much tougher games and still came out of it with three points to the good.

Would this be the same confidence they have had for the last 20 years ??Every year its been "this is our year for the title"..nowt changes..

I think they can be confident on 4th place

Doubt they get any higher than that though.

Yeah, its difficult to see them progressing past that. They do have some talent, but not really enough to push it on. Even at their best a few years ago, they were still a 3/4 man team!

Skashion the last 19 games is 3 this season 16 last. Yes they are not identical but I am pointing out over half a season with similar games that there are 4 teams with similar records and we should not patronise and call people deluded when the records are all similar. I hate it when act like Rags.

Now an arsenal or spud fan saying this I would call deluded

Who did he play for? I missed that signing.

On a more serious note, they are fucking dreaming.

Their team is inferior to the team they had 3 or 4 years ago. They had Xabi and Mascerano and Torres was arguably the best striker in the world and starfish was likewise one of the best midfielders in the world. And they didn't win it then did they.

If they get higher than 5th they will have done well.

If they couldn't win the title with Reina, Carragher, Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard & Torres (all two years younger) what makes them think they have got it sewn up this year?

TBF Dalgleish has done pretty well to turn things around there. When he took over it seemed possible they would go down. He gave them CL qualifying form in his time last season. I also think he has bought pretty well. I would be dissapointed and surprised if they finished above us but Dalgleish has restored their pride and they will be no easy game for any side.

They aren't title contenders, but they are deffo on the up. Dalglish has a very simple but effective style of management that they really needed to steady the ship. He has bought the best players from mid-table teams, just like the old days of 80's, and he will make them into a force. On their day they can beat any of the top four, but consistency is the key and they won't have enough in the tank for this. I also put them as 4th this season.

The top 2 positions this season will be really close, and it's the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea who will scupper the chances of anyone pulling away with a significant gap.

They're going to finish higher than the Arse, and no mistake.

So your argument is start your results which include their good run of form and our bad run of form, when they're playing disproportionately at home against the top seven and we're playing disproportionately away and that's a fair reflection of the strength of the teams. With that kind of stats work you should really be on RAWK where they compare Lucas playing for ninety minutes to De Jong playing for seven.

You have no confidence in your assessment and you know it otherwise you'd have them down as realistic title contenders and not as 4th contenders (probable 4th finisher), same as I do.

The honeymoon factor of Dalglish coming in, added to the complete lack of pressure on the team also played a part in their run. Let's see what happens when they get a couple of shitty results
