The isle of Lewis and Harris is indeed stunning. I was there 5 or years ago working. Stayed in Tarbert. It's quaint harbour and castle reminded me of Cornwall. Also stayed in Stornaway and one or two other places i cannot recollect. I was there about 3 weeks in total, loved it. Was rugged cold and windy in January/ February but I'd like to revisit in summer. You are right about the British countryside.
I reckon if you hit Harris on the right day you would be pushed to find anywhere more stunning.
Mind you Chesterman Beach, Tofino is pretty special too.
Snorkelling the Barrier Reef was very memorable.
I have fond memories of Scotland and it's Islands and Highlands. I enjoyed being there.
Worked on the main Orkney Island 4 times and stayed at Castlehill, a 4* rated guest house in Evie. Denise is a lovely accommodating lady and great cook. She looked after me and two workmates and i highly recommend staying there. Sat in the hot tub drinking beer whilst enjoying scenery of the Rouse and nearby islands, so serene.
The Rouse is where the North sea meets the Atlantic and when the tides are running together. (between 25 to 30 knots I'm told) it's a spectacular sight to watch the boils and swirls of broken white water.
