Maybe the author of that masterpiece of human intelligence forgot for a while that it's never easy to explain a multifactorial phenomenon in a monocausal way.

Whilst the article is disrespectful to Martin, the finger does still have to be pointed at the decision makers at the club. Denayer should have been kept and Martin should have been allowed to go home to Argentina and finish his career over there. This season has been one too far for his legs

Nothing stopped us keeping both then we.could have had both Nasri & Kelechi in the CL squad. Someone was going to prefer Martin over Denayer, that's why he went.

Well I for one would like to know a few things
1 who else could have taken his place
2 who were we playing and the circumstances
3 there have been times this year that we have been poor front to back
4 most importantly MDM may not have played great every time he was on the pitch but he gives it his best

3) that's as maybe but look at the results with an without him. Without him we have managed to be poor and still pick up points.
4) (Least importantly actually) "Giving it his best" is the least expected. I'd give my best as well.

No got any knickers in a twist I would have let him retire at the start of the season and kept deneyer as he was never gonna be up to doing full games especially not in a row, but this is really a pointless thread of what if's we could start one on every player bar ferdy and sergio this season as they have all had a mare at points, but that would clog the board. Stats are great at singling out certain points people want to make for someone, who else played them games and could the same be said about them too? probably but what s the point we are where we are because the team have been poor as a team at times

It's a very fair question and if you take emotion out of it you'd be hard pressed to argue with the logic.
He's been absolutely useless this year. MP should not have kept him this season and it looked like he was kept as a defensive midfielder to play the last 10 minutes here and there to kill off games, which would have been fine had we held onto Denayer. But we didn't, so once the injury crisis hit we were left with a guy who has clearly checked out physically and isn't up to premier league football anymore.
Take the results out of it and think back on the performances from him. With him, Mangala & Otamendi have both looked absolutely awful. He's given away card after card, penalties and free kicks in awful areas. Without him, suddenly Mangala's looking like the defender we bought and Otamendi looks better. (I will concede as I always have this season that we ended up with both Demichelis AND Kolarov playing at the same time, which ruined our backline, so it wasn't all his fault).
The final straw for me was the FA Cup game. He should have played out of his skin to protect and inspire the kids that were effectively sacrificed at Chelsea. But he didn't. He didn't bother, leaving Tosin completely at the mercy of Chelsea despite his best efforts.
I do believe if Martin didn't play this season other than how he was played in those opening games we'd have walked this league.
But he did and we didn't. Let's hope now everyone else is healthy we can finish with a bang and secure top 3 and a final appearance, so we can all send him on his way with a pat on the back for his efforts in the last few years campaigns which can be remembered more fondly. A shame we didn't get him earlier in his career, he was some player at Bayern.

I stopped giving the article credit after the line Instead it is Pellegrini’s loyalty to Martín Demichelis that has perhaps been City’s undoing in the league. And after seeing who wrote it, I had to choke back a snort. Some of his other articles are much more interesting;) A few months ago I saw one on how Pep and Thiago were like Qui-Gon and Obi-wan. Oh, and there was another creative one on James Joyce and the Silva-Aguero partnership. So forgive me if I can't take his articles (30% sense and 70% nonsense) seriously.
Granted the performance of Martin was poor in almost every match he played this season, most of the time it's not his fault alone. We're not winning midfield battles in those matches, nor are we creating many chances. And our defence did not seem to understand each other that well.
I understand why Pellegrini play Martin in these matches. We have no other centre-backs left. No one could foresee that we would have an injury crisis in the backline. And since experience matters a lot to the development of centre-backs, it seemed a sensible choice back in September to send Denayer on loan and keep Martin, who won't mind spending most of his time on the bench. In hindsight, we should have probably played one of the Ferns or Sagna instead, but one of the major failings of Pellers is his stubborness. He probably thought, why play someone who is not a centre-back when we still have natural centre-backs available? So I think it is a decision forced by injuries rather than loyalty.
That said, Guardian's City coverage (and that for other teams in the league as well) are really crap though. Their articles on La Liga seem much better.

why do we get it so wrong, bad at the back this season has been just as much midfield loosing the ball and leaving defence wide open..
with or without DM there would be little difference, its been an average team effort why we are 4th.
i think we have only let in 2 more goals than everbodies favourite Leicester, looking at statistics isnt the answer.

Denayer is going to have to play well when he finally gets a chance given all the expectation on here. Anything less than playing like Marcel Desailly at his peak is going to disappoint a lot of people.
I hope the lad does well but he has been built up far too much imo.
Re. MDM I agree with the poster who said that he needed a run of games to get up to speed but I guess there was a reason why Pell never gave him this. In retrospect relying on him as a key member of the squad does seem to be a pivotal decision but, at the time, I was ok with our centre back situation in the early part of the season.
I must admit that I have a twinge of envy about how many youngsters are getting a chance at the swamp. I am sure that our lads are just as good (or better) than theirs and just need a chance when surrounded by established first teamers.
