When my mum was little girl in the 40s she had a cat that regularly fell down the toilet. They had the old style 'tippler' outdoor toilets then. It was basically a hole straight into the main sewer with a trickle feed supply of water into a tank. When the tank filled it tippled over and washed away all the crap. They used to have to knot old bedsheets together and lower it into the toilet to rescue the cat before it got washed away. My mum always had the job of washing the cat afterwards.
